Edmund J. Clowes
Edmund J. Clowes, M/SGT USAF (ret) 1983, passed away in Rancho Cordova on June 26, 2008. He was born on July 22, 1924 in Houlton, Maine, the son of Joseph B. Clowes and Jennie Louise (Mooney) Clowes.
He graduated from Houlton High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After completion of navy service, he continued his education at the Richmond Professional Institute of William and Mary College in Richmond, Va. After completing his studies, he entered the U.S. Air Force and retired in 1966 after 21 years of service. Upon retirement, he worked for the state of California, retiring in 1981. He continued working for the state of California part time as a retired annuitant for 13 years (1988-2001).
He was active in many community organizations, serving as past master of American River Grange No. 172 in Rancho Cordova, past president of Fair Oaks PSA (program for active senior adults), past vice president of the Cordova Community Council, member of VFW Post 10125 of Rancho Cordova, and an affiliate member of Houlton Grange No. 16 of Houlton, Maine. He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church of Fair Oaks and an active participant of St. Clements Episcopal Church of Rancho Cordova.
He was the husband of Jene (Smith) Childs Clowes of Rancho Cordova, formerly of Mineral Wells, Texas; father of Mario E. Clowes; grandfather to five grandsons, Michael Dennis of Anna, Timothy Dennis, Christopher Dennis, Aaron Clowes and Jonathan Clowes of Elk Grove; five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves stepsons, Robert Childs, George Childs, William Childs; stepdaughter, Gail Sanabria; five step grandsons, four step granddaughters, and five step great-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews and very special cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Ruth (Brick) Dennis Clowes in 1992; stepson, Clare Dennis in 1988; parents, Joseph and Jennie Clowes; grandparents, James and Winifred Mooney; two brothers, Gerald Clowes and George Clowes; and special uncle and aunt, Clyde and Ruby Sanderson.
Remembrances of flowers may be made, or donations to the charity of your choice or to Ed Clowes Memorial Fund, at either St. Francis Episcopal Church or St. Clements Episcopal Church.
Visitation will be held Wednesday July 2, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Lane in Fair Oaks.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 11430 Fair Oaks Blvd., in Fair Oaks.
Frieda Hospenthal
Frieda Hospenthal, 90, of Elk Grove and formerly of Galt, died June 30 at a Sacramento hospital of natural causes. She was born Frieda Elizabeth Scharli to Swiss immigrants on July 8, 1917 in Monroe, Wis., and has lived on ranches in the Galt/Elk Grove area 70 years. She has also lived on ranches in San Francisco. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church who enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are her sons, John Hospenthal (Kathy) of Elk Grove and Mike Hospenthal of Elk Grove; daughter, Martha Quinn (Jack) of Jackson; grandchildren, John, Trisha, and Berne Quinn and John, Lauren and Gregg Hospenthal; and six great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Joe Hospenthal, preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove on Thursday at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at Ben Salas Funeral Home, 149 Fourth St., Galt, on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice or St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Helen E. Graham
Helen E. Graham, born Aug. 12, 1922, to Emma and Bernhard Sasse in Golden Valley, N.D., passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Vienna Convalescent in Lodi.
Helen was the dearly beloved mother of Barbara Barnhart, husband Vern, of Galt, and Patti Steinwert, husband Kent, of Lodi. Her six grandchildren were the light and joy of her life: Wendi Gaskins, husband Jim, of Elk Grove, Cheri Sinor, husband Mike, of Arroyo Grande, Jason Flint of Sacramento, Brandon Flint, wife Anadee, of Phoenix, Ariz., Jared Steinwert of Sacramento and Jehna Steinwert of San Francisco. Helen was dearly loved by her six great-grandchildren, Cheyanne and Doug Guttridge of Galt/Elk Grove, Tomas and Esmee Sinor, and Jackson and Piper Flint of Phoenix.
Surviving Helen are two brothers, Leroy Sasse and wife Ginger of Keizer, Ore., Art Sasse and wife Margaret of Woodburn, Ore.; many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Herbert Graham, who passed in 1994. Also preceding her in death were her four sisters, Frieda, Violet, Dee and Julie; two brothers, Orville and Ron, all of Oregon.
Helen retired from the state of California in 1981 after 31 years of service. She took great pride in her volunteer work over the years, Campfire Girls, voters’ registration and elections, Brailing Association, Call 3, and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sacramento. Her interests over the years included the Sierra Ford Mustang Club, American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, Department of Transportation Quarter Century Club and traveling. Helen and Herb traveled extensively to many countries and visited all but two states in the U.S. Helen’s family and friends will dearly miss her.
Church services will be held Thursday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 701 S. Pleasant Avenue, Lodi, followed by a private graveside service. There is no visitation. Ruth V. Kelley
Ruth Victoria (Teaney) Kelley, 97, of Galt passed away on June 30, 2008. She was born to John and Florence Teaney on Sept. 1, 1910, in Park Hill, Okla., later moving to Klamath Falls, Ore., where she grew up before settling in Galt.
A devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, her passion was spending time with family, as well as a love for music. Her hobbies included quilting, bowling, cooking, reading, and playing the piano and organ. Ruth was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of love, grace, faith and dignity.
Ruth is survived in death by two sisters, Mary “Sissy” Daulton and Ella Mae Worley of Klamath Falls, Ore.; three sons, Glenn Buster and Evelyn Kelley, of Fruitland, Idaho, Percy Wyly Kelley of Valley Springs, and Hubert H. and Elizabeth Charlene Kelley, Sr., of Galt; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Fannie May and Emma; brothers Carl, Budge and Bill; and grandchildren Johnny and Kim.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Ruth’s life on Saturday, July 5 at 11 a.m., at Lodi Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at the Lodi Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A committal service at the Klamath Memorial Park in Klamath Falls, Ore., will be held on Monday, July 7 at 2 p.m.

Melvin E. Freitas

A.R. Smiley
A.R. Smiley, 92, died June 20, 2008 in Galt. He was born on Sept. 22, 1915 in Childers, Texas.
A.R. lived in Ryde 13 years, then moved to Walnut Grove, living there for 20 years before moving to Galt where he lived for 27 years. He drove a truck for 41 years and was an avid bowler for 25 years. He served in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He was a member of the Lodi and Galt Moose lodges for 30 years and the Galt Grange for 20 years.
He is survived by his lovingly devoted wife of 66 years, Glee; daughter, Shirley Malta; grandchildren, J. Cliff (Suzanne) Malta, Chris Malta, Ramey Smiley, Kim (Tim) Robbins; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
His son, Dwain R. Smiley, preceded him in death.
Services were conducted at Ben Salas Funeral Home on June 24.
Melvin E. Freitas
Melvin Eugene Freitas, 81, died on June 20, 2008 in Lodi. He was born May 25, 1927.
Melvin was a seaman with the Merchant Marines and World War II veteran, aboard the SS Peter Moran. He had many stories to tell about those days.
Melvin was also a fine artist, loved music, writing poetry, songs, farming and gardening. He loved his church, family and friends. He always would lend a helping hand to those in need. He loved to sail and fish and enjoyed gatherings.
He also was a great cook, a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin and friend.
Melvin was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Freitas, and by his son, Daniel Eugene Freitas.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Freitas of Lodi; son, Larry and wife Robin Freitas of Stockton; grandchildren, Chris Freitas of Galt, Monti De’Coty of Hayward, Hileri Freitas of Stockton, Dustin Freitas of Hayward, Tony Freitas of Idaho and Jennifer Freitas of Merced; great-grandchildren, Austin Freitas and Madison Freitas of Galt, Hunter De’Coty of Hayward, Preston Freitas of Stockton, Dejaye, Nickolas and Aubree Freitas of Hayward, Tony Freitas, Jr., of Idaho; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Robert Housh officiating, at Valley Bible Church, 10545 N. Davis Road, Stockton, CA 95209; telephone, 952-1689.
There is no visitation, and committal will be private at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Holly E. Doxey
Holly Elizabeth Doxey, born Dec. 20, 2005 to Dr. Kaio Alan and Jeanenne Doxey, was declared dead at 1:25 p.m. on June 23, 2008 after being struck by a car the evening before and attempts to revive her had failed.
She left a family that cherished her and will miss her deeply, including her six sisters, BrieAnn, Tessa, Shannon, Marriah, Aubrie and Natallie; two brothers, Kaio and Zackary; and her grandparents, David Ford Doxey, Carol Williams Doxey and Gay Lundskog Sherrow.
Holly loved horses, singing and dancing, but most of all she loved to be with her family, always greeting them with a running hug when they would come home.
There will be a viewing at the Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m. An additional viewing will be held prior to the service on Friday, June 27, at the LDS Church, 972 Vintage Oak, Galt, from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Holly’s memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at the LDS Church. Interment will be at Galt Cemetery.

Jennifer Tapia
Jennifer Tapia of Galt died on June 13, 2008 of cancer at the age of one year. She was born May 3, 2007 in Sacramento.
Surviving Jennifer are her mother, Norma Tapia; father, Guillermo Tapia; siblings, Diego and Guillermo, Jr.; grandparents, Gonzalo Garcia and Maria I. Garcia of Galt, and Jesus Tapia Martinez and Cristina Lopez Herrera of Mexico.
A Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18 at St. Christopher’s with burial following in the Galt-Arno Cemetery District.
The family is thankful for all the prayers and support.
Mildred L. Stallings
Mildred L. Stallings, 87, a longtime resident of Acampo, passed away on June 14, 2008. She was born in Qulin, Mo., to Allie Mae and Jackob Piatt.
In 1946, Mildred, husband “Red” and their two children moved to San Joaquin County. Mildred retied from the U.S. Post Office in Thornton after 15 years. She was a member of the Lodi Republican Women Federated, a member of a women’s Christian group, and she and Red were members of Galt Bible Church. After retiring, Mildred enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Mildred’s husband, Oral “Red” Stallings, preceded her in death in 2004.
Surviving Mildred are her son, Pete Stallings and daughter, Jan Stallings, both of Acampo; grandson, Mike (wife Tricia) Stallings; granddaughter, Shelley L. (husband Bob) Bass; two great-granddaughters, Samantha and Danielle Stallings; two nieces and two nephews.
Viewing will be Wednesday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt with a burial service immediately following at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi.
A reception will be held at Galt Bible Church following the service for those who would like to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the Stallings family is requesting that any donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Yolanda Maraspini
Yolanda Maraspini, 45, passed away June 13, 2008. She was born on June 11, 1963.
A longtime resident of Galt, she is survived by her children, Cameron Hunwardsen, Gage Hunwardsen, Josh Hunwardsen and Troy Hunwardsen. Yolanda also leaves behind her parents, Toni and John Maraspini; and her siblings, John Maraspini, Jr. (Debbie), Daniel Maraspini (Serena), Dina Deerinck (Timothy), Charlotte Maraspini, Joni Maraspini and Hannah Maraspini.
Yolanda loved being around people, taking her friends and family under her wings and will be remembered as a creative person who loved sharing.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Edubigues S. Casarrubias
Edubigues Sanchez Casarrubias, 67, of Galt died June 11, 2008 at his home. He was born on Oct. 17, 1940 in Petatlan.
His greatest joy was spending time with his great grandsons, playing in the backyard or park, or picking fresh fruit off his trees. Edu was a member of the Knights of Columbus and spent endless hours devoted to St. Christopher’s Catholic Church.
Edu is survived by his wife, Simona Sanchez; daughter, Esther C. de Jaramillo and son-in-law David Jaramillo; son, Manuel Rivas and daughter-in-law Rosa Rivas; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services included a rosary on June 16 at Galt Funeral Home and a Mass at St. Christopher’s on June 17.
Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sacramento. Galt Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Rodney L. Parker
Rodney L. Parker, 72, passed away at his home on June 4, 2008 with his family by his side. He was born on Nov. 14, 1935 in Zena, Okla., to Francis A. Parker and Lillie Mae Praytor Parker.
His family moved to California in 1941 and to Galt in 1945. Rodney attended Galt High in 1953. He met his wife, Virginia, in high school, and they were married Sept. 11, 1954. He worked for PG&E for 30 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Galt First Baptist Church and had many friends in their active Senior Bible Study class.
Rod was very active in community service organizations. He held many offices over the years, including president of Galt Warriors Booster Club, Galt Jaycees and Galt Dry Creek Men’s Club. He was a coach with Galt Little League and also served as commissioner. He was a director of Elk Horn Country Club and Valley Men’s Club. He was the recipient of the PG&E Trailblazer Award, given for outstanding service to the company. He also received the Dry Creek Walt Lear Sportsman of the Year Award for the 1978-79 year. He loved to play golf and won numerous flight championships at both Dry Creek Men’s Club and Elk Horn Country Club. He loved best, time spent with his grandchildren and took pride in their accomplishments.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Rodger Parker of Galt and Edward Parker (Annaliza) of Seattle; grandchildren, Rodney Parker, Glenn Parker and Michael Parker of Galt, Riley Parker of Seattle, Michael Lapp of Texas; Donna (Darrin) Wilson of Dallas, and Bridgette Morris of Sacramento; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Emily and Natalie Morris, and Connor and Parker Wilson; brothers, Francis A. Parker and Wayne (Paulette) Parker; sister, Sandra (Don) Bukovec; sister-in-law, Mary (Dave) Weese; plus many nephew and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and in-laws, Francis and Lillie Parker, Glenn and Ella Mae Ingram, brother-in-law Guy Ingram and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Lee Lapp Parker.
A celebration of his life will be held at Galt First Baptist Church, 653 A Street in Galt on Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m.

Rose P. Schneider
Rose Pauline Schneider of Galt, 95, a long-time resident of Lodi, passed away on June 5, 2008 in Galt.
She was born in Gregory, S.D., on May 30, 1913 to Constantine and Mary Stirm. She moved to Lodi with her family when she was six years old in 1919. She married Nelson Schneider on Oct. 28, 1934 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She and her husband moved to Escalon in 1947 and lived there for 30 years before returning to Lodi.
Mrs. Schneider enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Peter’s Kitchen Band, Fifty-Plus Club, Ladies Weekly Card Group and Couples Game Group.
She is survived by her daughter, Marlene (Sam) DiNapoli of Galt; daughter-in-law, Joan Schneider of Reno; five grandchildren, Cindy (Tom) Goldman, Kathy (Henry) Seifert, Tammie (Victor) Vandenburg, Alissa Walton, and Eric (Cherie) Schneider; 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Schneider, in February 1984; son, Dr. Richard Schneider, Ph.D., in February 1990; five brothers, William, Ray, John, Paul and Robert Stirm; three sisters, Helen Hoffman, Hilda Schamber and Frieda Kayl.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Monday, June 16 at 11 a.m. at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. There is no visitation.

David W. Waddle
David Wayne Waddle, 55, of Galt passed away on Friday, June 6, 2008. He was born in Como, Miss., on Feb. 18, 1953.
David was raised in Galt and graduated from Galt High School. He began working with motorcycles at a young age and was known by his family and friends as a brilliant mechanic and jack-of-all-trades.
Preceding David in death were his parents, Lagrone and Sadie Waddle; and earlier this year by his son, Kennith “Kenny” Waddle.
Surviving David are his brother, Larry “Butch” Waddle of Woodbridge; daughter, Cheryl Waddle of Galt; granddaughters, Hailey and Jessica Waddle of Lodi; and his partner/sidekick, Esther Kreizel of Galt.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 t the Woodbridge Missionary Baptist Church.
