Melvin E. Freitas
- A.R. Smiley
A.R. Smiley, 92, died June 20, 2008 in Galt. He was born on Sept. 22, 1915 in Childers, Texas.
A.R. lived in Ryde 13 years, then moved to Walnut Grove, living there for 20 years before moving to Galt where he lived for 27 years. He drove a truck for 41 years and was an avid bowler for 25 years. He served in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He was a member of the Lodi and Galt Moose lodges for 30 years and the Galt Grange for 20 years.
He is survived by his lovingly devoted wife of 66 years, Glee; daughter, Shirley Malta; grandchildren, J. Cliff (Suzanne) Malta, Chris Malta, Ramey Smiley, Kim (Tim) Robbins; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
His son, Dwain R. Smiley, preceded him in death.
Services were conducted at Ben Salas Funeral Home on June 24.

Melvin E. Freitas
Melvin Eugene Freitas, 81, died on June 20, 2008 in Lodi. He was born May 25, 1927.
Melvin was a seaman with the Merchant Marines and World War II veteran, aboard the SS Peter Moran. He had many stories to tell about those days.
Melvin was also a fine artist, loved music, writing poetry, songs, farming and gardening. He loved his church, family and friends. He always would lend a helping hand to those in need. He loved to sail and fish and enjoyed gatherings.
He also was a great cook, a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin and friend.
Melvin was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Freitas, and by his son, Daniel Eugene Freitas.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Freitas of Lodi; son, Larry and wife Robin Freitas of Stockton; grandchildren, Chris Freitas of Galt, Monti De’Coty of Hayward, Hileri Freitas of Stockton, Dustin Freitas of Hayward, Tony Freitas of Idaho and Jennifer Freitas of Merced; great-grandchildren, Austin Freitas and Madison Freitas of Galt, Hunter De’Coty of Hayward, Preston Freitas of Stockton, Dejaye, Nickolas and Aubree Freitas of Hayward, Tony Freitas, Jr., of Idaho; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Robert Housh officiating, at Valley Bible Church, 10545 N. Davis Road, Stockton, CA 95209; telephone, 952-1689.
There is no visitation, and committal will be private at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Valley Bible Church, 19545 N. Davis Road, Stockton, CA 95209, in Mel’s memory. A virtual register book may be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com where memories can be shared.

Holly E. Doxey
Holly Elizabeth Doxey, born Dec. 20, 2005 to Dr. Kaio Alan and Jeanenne Doxey, was declared dead at 1:25 p.m. on June 23, 2008 after being struck by a car the evening before and attempts to revive her had failed.
She left a family that cherished her and will miss her deeply, including her six sisters, BrieAnn, Tessa, Shannon, Marriah, Aubrie and Natallie; two brothers, Kaio and Zackary; and her grandparents, David Ford Doxey, Carol Williams Doxey and Gay Lundskog Sherrow.
Holly loved horses, singing and dancing, but most of all she loved to be with her family, always greeting them with a running hug when they would come home.
There will be a viewing at the Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m. An additional viewing will be held prior to the service on Friday, June 27, at the LDS Church, 972 Vintage Oak, Galt, from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Holly’s memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at the LDS Church. Interment will be at Galt Cemetery.
