Curt Metcalf
Curt Metcalf, 89, died March 21, 2008 in Lodi. He was a pilot, husband, dad, granddad, teacher and storyteller.
Curt lived his life on his own terms. He said he never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did, and that was flying airplanes. His exploits are legendary among all pilots who knew him.
Curt learned to fly before World War II, flying Fairchild biplanes. During the war, he joined the Navy where he flew a Douglas SBD Dauntless on missions in the South Pacific before becoming a Naval flight instructor.
After the war, he returned to Sacramento and flew crop dusters throughout the state. He married Ila Metcalf and together they raised a family. In the 50s, Curt formed Metcalf Flying Service and quickly became a fixture at Sacramento Municipal Airport, teaching countless pilots and completing charter flights all over the world.
Curt’s second marriage to Dorothy Metcalf revolved around flying, Dorothy’s fruit preserving, and Curt’s second passion, restoring cars. Curt restored American cars only, the smaller the production quantity the better, during which time he won many car show awards.
Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday, a great time for family, friends and Curt’s amazing stories. Although Curt did not want a service, and none is planned, there will be a get-together of friends and family at a later date.
Curt lived a rich life. He will be greatly missed by his family and by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
