Mollie P. Tarbutton
Mollie P. Tarbutton, 89, of Lodi died July 10, 20007 in Stockton after a long illness. She was born in England, Ark., and has lived in this area since 1994.
She was married to Edmund H. Tarbutton while he was in the military, and they traveled extensively. She enjoyed cooking and quilting, but she loved ballroom dancing and entertaining.
Her husband, Edmund, preceded her in death.
Surviving her are two daughters, Catherine Sue and Barbara Lott of Virginia; sisters, Lois Harvey of Lodi and Irma Moore of Delano; brother, Dudley Morris of Tennessee; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A cryptside service was held Monday at Lodi Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements were by Ben Salas Funeral Home.
Ray Allen
Ray Allen, 56, of Galt died July 11, 2007 in a Mather hospital of natural causes. He was born in Glendale and lived in the Phoenix area for 39 years.
He lived in the Galt area 17 years and also lived in Pioneer. Mr. Allen served in the 258th Engineer Company of the U.S. Army. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed operating heavy equipment as a blade man.
Surviving him are his wife, Beverly; sons, Glenn and James; daughter, Angel; mother, Dortha Allen; sisters, Shirley, Linda and Judy; brothers, Jerry, Larry and Bob; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A chapel service was held Friday at Ben Salas Funeral Home with Pastor Steve James officiating. Mr. Allen will be buried in Phoenix at National Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
Jesse L. Beam
Jesse L. Beam, 91, of Galt died at his home on July 9, 2007 after a brief illness. He was born in Grove, Okla., on Aug. 1, 1915.
He lived in Pine Grove for nine years, Idaho for two years and 75+ years in Galt. He was a machinist by trade, but enjoyed building seven family homes. He was a member of the Galt Seventh-day Adventist Church as a deacon and then an elder for many years.
Surviving him are his wife of 64 years, Betty Beam of Galt; three daughters, Judith Shipley of Emmett, Idaho, Doreen Beam of Sacramento, Joyce Neergaard of Loma Linda; sister, Iva Schlenker of Wheatland; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Ben Salas Funeral Home.
Joni Jackson
Joan “Joni” Jackson, 53, of Galt died July 11 after a chronic illness. She was born Nov. 4, 1953 in San Fernando and has lived in Galt since 1989.
She lived in Los Angeles until she was 21 and then Sacramento for 15 years. She attended Catholic schools through high school and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was fond of gardening, pressing flowers, collecting angels, writing short stories and shopping with her best friend and daughter, Nicki.
Surviving are her husband, William Jackson of Galt; daughters, Nicki (Edward) Herren of Galt and Jessica Peterson of Montana; and many nieces and nephews.
She will be buried in Galt Cemetery. Services are pending.
Joe Vasquez, Jr.
Jose Murillo “Joe” Vasquez, Jr., of Lodi, 53, passed away suddenly on July 11, 2007 while hiking up Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. He was born Oct. 10, 1953 in Ciudad, Juarez, Mexico and came to the United States with his family at a young age.
He graduated from Lodi High School in 1971, where he played on the school’s first soccer team. Soccer was a big passion in Joe’s life, and he also played on the U.C. Davis team while attending college there.
Joe began his career as a soccer referee in 1979, progressing from youth games to high school games to semi-pro games and finally to NCAA “Final Four” games, of which he was most proud.
He was named to the All-American high school soccer team while at Lodi High. He refereed the Pan American soccer games and was a volunteer in 1994 when the World Cup soccer games were played at Stanford University. He also coached many youth sports in Lodi.
Joe married the former Jenny Davis in 1977, and they have two children, Andy and Elizabeth. He was employed for 30 years in the clinical laboratory as a technician at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton. He was proud to be very active in his union, SEIU.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Lodi.
Surviving Joe are his wife and children; parents, Jose, Sr. and Delfina Vasquez of Lodi; brother, Pete (Margaret) Vasquez of Planada; sisters, Emily Vasquez (Ralph) Lightstone of Sacramento and Mona Lisa Vasquez of Walnut Creek; in-laws, Marvin and Merna Davis of Lodi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Rosary was held July 17 in the Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel of Lodi. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Walnut and Church streets in Lodi. Committal will follow in Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.
Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dan A. Brown
Dan A. Brown unexpectedly went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2007 at the age of 63.
Dan is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon; three adult children, Kevin Brown, Mindi Rold and Joshua Brown; five grandchildren, McKenna and Trevor Brown, and Colton, Mason and Nevaeh Rold; and other loved ones, Esther and Judy Mims, Shirley Hackett, Kimi, Kendall and Ava Gooding, Steve, Cammie, Aaron, Nathan and Claire Plath, and Katrina Brown and Mike Rold.
Dan was a licensed Christian Marriage and Family Counselor for 30 years and also a licensed pastor. He graduated from Biola University and served as a youth pastor at Roosevelt Church in Lancaster.
In 1969, Dan and Sharon served as missionaries in Bolivia, South America. When they returned to the states, Dan served as a youth pastor in San Jose at the Evangelical Free Church. He also worked with Dr. Dean Smith at Saratoga Center for Guidance and Growth as a counselor.
In 1978, Dan and his family moved to Lodi to begin working as a therapist at Nautico Ministries and eventually went on to open his own private practice as a Christian counselor with Marie Van Veldhuizen at Lodi Family Guidance and Growth.
Dan had a heart for missions and facilitated more than 30 Mexico mission trips with various churches. He had a passion for youth and taught anger management classes once a week at Liberty High School. He loved movies, cycling, cars, Honey Treat yogurt and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
In 2000, he started with his youngest son, Josh, an auto detailing business called “An Eye for Perfection.” Part of the profit he made from detailing cars he donated to the One Eighty Teen Center in Lodi.
Dan was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Lodi and also helped facilitate the single parent ministry. Through the years, he also presented workshops to various churches and groups in the community.
Dan had a big heart and loved the unlovable. His purpose in life was to share the lord and be used by Him. The week before he died, he participated in M30, a six-day, 360-mile bike trip down the coast to raise money for Lesotho, Africa. This was his third year as a cyclist for this event.
He passed away the day after M360 ended, doing what he loved, cycling and sharing the Lord. He was an amazing husband, father, grandpa and friend, who will be missed. He stayed the course, entering his heavenly father’s arms and hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Viewing will be held at Lodi Funeral home on Wednesday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 20 at First Baptist Church, 267 N. Mills, Lodi.
