Brenda S. Spielman
Brenda Sue Alexander Spielman, 53, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2007 surrounded by family in Lodi. She was born Aug. 11, 1953 to Austin and Jessie Alexander in Lodi.
Brenda lived most of her life in Galt, moving to Lodi for the last few years. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Lodi Wal-Mart for their compassion and support during Brenda’s brave battle with cancer.
Brenda is survived by her sons, Michael Haworth of Galt, Brandon Haworth of Lodi, and T.J. Haworth of Lodi; grandchildren, Brittany and Kyle Haworth; and siblings, Frances (Roy) Kilgallon of Tennessee, Austin (Roxanne) Alexander, Jr. of Lodi, Thomas (Elaine) Alexander of Isleton, and Danny (Roxane) Alexander of Lodi.
Her parents and two siblings, J.D. Alexander and Jo Evelyn Johnson, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 at Lodi Funeral Home, 725 S. Fairmont Ave. in Lodi. There is no visitation, and committal is private. A virtual register can be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com where memories may be shared.
Adila D. Dunkle
Adila Dolores Dunkle, 73, died on June 5, 2007 in Lodi surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 20, 1933 in Portland, Ore.
Adila was a member of First Baptist Church of Lodi for many years and a former resident of Galt. She enjoyed crocheting, had a passion for cooking, and was an avid reader. She was always happiest when surrounded by family and cherished family get-togethers, treasuring every memory and watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren accomplish their goals in life. To remember Adila is to remember a loving strong woman who loved the Lord.
Adila’s husband of 35 years, Ernest Paul Dunkle, and brother Ali Addi preceded her in death.
Surviving Adila are her children, Joseph Forsythe and wife Jackie of Fort Mojavi, Ariz., Cathy Anderson and husband Jon of Manteca, Julie Fachner and husband Dan of Alta Loma, Brandy Greenhow of Yelm, Wash., Paula Dunkle of Galt, Jose Hurtado of Pasadena; brother, Joseph Addi of Eugene, Ore.; 16 grandchildren, Michael, James, Billy, Talia, Joey, Tori, Tawni, Joshua, Crissy, Zachery, Luke, Jacob, Lexy, Matthew, Melissa and Yesenia; and four great grandchildren, Esme, Isobella, Amilliana and Cairo.
Family and friends are welcome to Gierhart-Wells & Donahue Funeral Home Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to sign the register book for Adila.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 14 at Temple Baptist Church, 801 S. Lower Sacramento Rd., Lodi at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dave Bliss and Pastor Frank Mack officiating.
Interment will be private at Lodi Memorial Cemetery.

Jay M. Melton
Jay M. Melton, 77, passed away June 9, 2007 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He grew up in Arkansas, one of 11 brothers and sisters.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He retired in 1987 from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department with more than 25 years of service. He considered some of his best years to be the years he served as sergeant with the Delta Patrol.
Jay loved his church family at Wilton Bible Church. He had a kind and selfless heart that made an unforgettable impact on anyone he met. He had close friends in all walks of life and was a great role model in both his professional and personal life.
Surviving Jay are his wife of 54 years, Jane; son, Rick; daughter, Gail; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends are welcome for visitation on Sunday, June 17 from 12 to 5 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd (916-686-1888).
Services will be held on Monday, June 18 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, 8929 E. Stockton Blvd. Interment will follow in South E ast Lawn Memorial Park.
Bernice N. Wagner
Bernice Nadine “Nana” Wagner, 83, passed away June 10, 2007 at Royal Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Galt. She was born Sept. 21, 192 in Hinsdale, Ill., to Lucille Elizabeth Niermeyer and Merlyn Burl Watts.
After the death of Bernice’s mother, her father married Vera Evelyn Hoopes and had two more daughters, Jacqueline and Veradeene, moving to Glendale where she grew up in the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
Bernice attended Laurelwood Academy in Oregon during high school and went on to study nursing at Pacific Union College in Angwin. She married Greek immigrant George Constantine Ponfilous, who took the name Emil John Sova, shortly after his arrival in America.
Bernice and “Shorty” (as he was fondly called) were married July 3, 1942 and had four children, Theresa, Georgina, George and Constantine. The family lived in San Francisco while Shorty served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. As a Navy wife, Bernice volunteered in the war effort.
Following the death of her husband, she moved her four children to her parents’ home in Lodi. While working as a nurse for the family physician, she met and married Roland Wagner, who had two daughters, Tonna and Shirley. They moved to Galt in 1958, purchased an old Victorian and ran The Sunshine Café for a few years, in addition to driving a school bus for the Galt school district. She later returned to nursing at Sutter General Hospital and Lodi Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, retiring after more than 30 years.
During retirement, she was active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Senior Citizens, Red Cross, Sweet Adelines and Seventh-day Adventist Church in Galt. She was a prayer warrior and became the family historian. Following the death of her second husband, she moved to Napa and attended the Napa Community Seventh-day Adventist Church. She later resided at Piners in Napa and Royal Oaks in Galt for care during Alzheimers.
Surviving Bernice are daughters, Theresa (Chuck) Bromme of Galt, Georgina (Glenn) Nash of Napa, Tonna (Royce) Day of Texas, Shirley Lowe of Texas; son, George (Diane) Sova of Idaho; grandchildren, Rebecca Aldridge of Galt, Carol (Keith) Hoffmann of New Orleans, Randy (Rita) Aldridge of Galt, Todd (Kristen) Schnaible of Galt, Karin (Phillip) Calantoc of Napa, Heidi (Brent) Riley of Oregon, Jason (Julie) Schnaible of Napa, Kimberly (David) Wyman of Southern California, Kasondra (Jason) Mayer of Idaho, Nora (Cameron) Crest of Southern California, Sara (Scott) Shrives of Southern California, Johnnie (MaryBeth) Day of North Carolina, Elizabeth, Karen, Amy and Jake Nash of Napa, Niko (Shon) Ferguson of Colorado, and Amy (Thomas) Warden of Texas; 30 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren; sister, Veradeene “Bunny” Glavich of Carmichael; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her son, Constantine Ponfilous Sova; grandsons, Sammy Whaley, Todd LuVerne Schnaible and Carl John Aldridge of Galt; and sister, Jacqueline Vitale of Lodi.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ben Salas Funeral Home, 149 Fourth Street in Galt, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Graveside service is at 2 p.m. Friday at Cherokee Memorial.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, June 16 at 2 p.m. at the Galt Seventh-day Adventist Church, 619 Myrtle Ave. Arrangements are under the direction of Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt.
