- Two big rallies led the North Team over the South Team 9-2 in the 36th annual Optimist All-Star baseball game Saturday.
The North team scored four runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth inning off of South team pitchers.
Galt pitcher Nikko Garcia represented the Warriors on the South team, making the trip alone after fellow Galt pitcher and Optimist player Brent Harrison couldn’t make the game due to a family vacation.
In the second inning, the North team got their first rally going when leadoff hitter Justin Lamb of Yuba City hit a single.
Woodcreek’s Ryan Rieger then hit a single to put the North team in scoring position.
Yuba City’s Aaron Crouch then hit a shot that scored Lamb for a 1-0 lead.
Rocklin’s Chris Garrison then hit a sacrifice grounder to score Reiger for a 2-0 lead, before Bryce Bandilla of Bella Vista hit an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
After Taylor Sanders of Casa Roble hit a single and with two outs, Cameron Eid of Granite Bay hit an RBI single for a 4-0 North lead.
Folsom’s Eric Nedeljkovic pitched the first and most of the second inning before Elk Grove’s Cody Berger took over for the South.
In the fourth inning, Charlie Robertson of Bella Vista started the second rally with a single.
Sanders then walked to put runners on first and second before Cameron Barr walked to load the bases.
Eid then walked in a run for a 5-0 lead.
Del Campo’s Ryan Dettman then hit an RBI single that scored two runs for a 7-0 lead.
Lamb then walked in the eighth run, before Reiger walked in the last run for a 9-0 lead.
Berger and Vacaville’s Ryan Rameriz pitched the fourth inning for the South.
The South scored both of their runs in the seventh inning
Kennedy’s Thomas Dickson led off the inning with a home run that cut the lead to 9-1.
Oak Ridge’s Fernando Tanaka was hit by a pitch and Pleasant Grove’s Nick Duval hit a single that advanced Tanaka to third base.
The North then executed a fielder’s choice on a Scott Krutel grounder, which allowed Tanaka to score for a 9-2 game.
Garcia played left field for the South and was put into the game by South head coach Guy Anderson of Cordova in the bottom of the fifth.
Garcia caught several fly balls in left field and was 0 for 2 at the plate.
Dickson led the South with a home run, one RBI and one walk and Tanaka had two hits including a double in four plate appearances.
