Galt JV baseball player Anthony Dughi made his first start of the season last Wednesday, but you wouldn’t know it just by watching.
The game was Galt’s third-to-last on its schedule, and the start was a reward for having pitched relief for the Warriors in previous games.
The result was a 9-2 win over Cordova, in which Dughi led the Warriors on the mound over five innings with six strikeouts, two walks, and one run.
“Dughi has come in relief for us a couple of times and he’s been working real hard to get up here and get a start… he did really well,” Galt head coach Paul Pendley said Wednesday evening.
“He’s been doing well in bullpen work and he hasn’t really pitched that many innings in relief so we needed to get him in here and get him a start.”
After the JV Warriors baseball program capped a small win streak with the win Wednesday, Pendley said that he is hoping the trend could continue with a win in Galt’s final game on Thursday.
The Warriors, who had bounced back and forth between wins and losses over the course of the season reached a stable place with wins over Union Mine and Christian Brothers in late April.
The Warriors scored their first run in the second inning, on an RBI single by Dughi for a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors added four more runs in the third inning.
Tyler House reached base on an error, and Charlie Grinrod’s single moved House to third base.
Pete Pendley then hit a double that scored House and Grinrod for a 3-1 lead.
A balk by Cordova’s pitcher moved Pendley to third base, then Tyler Glenn hit an RBI single to score Pendley for a 4-1 lead.
Steven Keagy reached base on an error that scored Glenn, who had advanced to third on an error, for a 5-1 lead.
Brandon Teel and Dughi both walked to load the bases, but the Warriors were unable to score and recorded two straight outs.
In the fourth inning, Pendley hit an RBI double that scored House, who had been hit by a pitch.
After Galt’s catcher bobbled the ball during Glenn’s at-bat, Grinrod, who had reached base on an error, scored for a 7-1 lead.
Keagy then hit an RBI single to score Pendley for an 8-1 lead.
The Warriors added their final run on an RBI double by Grinrod that scored Jamie Herscowitz, who had singled in the fifth inning.
Austin Cannell pitched two innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits.
The Warriors will play their final game Thursday at home against Ponderosa at 4:15 p.m.
