What would have been the only damper on the varsity Warriors’ victory against Tokay last Friday was given back to them on an appeal by Warriors head coach Warren Schroeder.
Schroeder appealed a call by referees in the fourth quarter that would have suspended Trevor Alcoriza for Friday’s league game against Union Mine.
Instead, Alcoriza, who has been a major contributor all season, will be allowed to play, which will aid the Warriors in their second league game.
The Warriors are looking for their second Sierra Valley Conference win Friday and their fourth straight, after defeating Tokay 38-7 in Lodi.
Alcoriza led the Warriors’ offense with two touchdown runs and a touchdown pass to Abram Piggee.
Piggee scored twice, once on the reception and also on a run.
The Warriors’ defense held an opponent to its lowest amount since a September 26 game against River City, whom they shut out.
Galt’s defense has now held an opponent to seven runs or less in three of their five games so far.
David Da Rose had one fumble recovery and had eight tackles, Eric Toscano had one fumble recovery and three tackles, and Anthony Trejo returned an interception for 48 yards and a touchdown, had a safety and made one tackle.
“Our boys are confident right now in our execution on both sides of the ball,” said Galt head coach Warren Schroeder.
“However, they also know that we have not played even close to our potential yet and are still making some mental mistakes that could cost us dearly in a big game. We are expecting a tough game against a great Coach in Dave Johnson,” Schroeder said.
Galt scored in the first quarter on a 57-yard touchdown run by Alcoriza with 5:39 left and Cody Klucznik kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors added two points to their total when Tokay botched a play and Trejo picked up a safety for a 9-0 lead.
With the ball back in Galt’s hands, Alcoriza threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Abram Piggee and Klucznik scored the PAT with 15.5 seconds left for a 16-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Trejo intercepted a Tokay pass and ran for a 48-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion run by Alcoriza from the one-yard line to take a 24-0 lead with 9:33 left.
Tokay scored its only touchdown on a five-yard run with five minutes left in the half to cut the score to 24-7.
The Warriors scored their last two touchdowns in the third quarter. Piggee scored on a 65-yard touchdown run with 9:11 left and Klucznik completed the PAT for a 31-7 lead.
Alcoriza later scored the last touchdown on a two-yard run with 5:29 left and Klucznik followed with his final PAT to go four for four on kicks for the game.
Tyler Kluender rushed for 22 yards, Trejo rushed for 42 yards, P.J. Lowe rushed for 17 yards, Piggee rushed for 31 yards, Alcoriza rushed for 123 yards and Byrd rushed for 25 yards and completed five of 11 passes for 93 yards.
Piggee had 123 receiving yards, Joey Ruiz had seven receiving yards and Jeff Weber rushed for 21 yards for Galt.
Neil Castro had one tackle, Piggee had three tackles, Brandon Cox had three tackles, Lowe had six tackles, Tyler Kelly had four tackles, Ruiz made nine tackles, Bill McDonald made six tackles, Kluender made four tackles, Alex Ochoa made one tackle, Alcoriza had six tackles, Nathan Sliver had two tackles, Julian Jaramillo had one tackle, Adam Russell had two tackles, Silviano Rodriguez had one tackle, Ryan Byrd had six tackles, David Petkovich had one tackle, Oscar Valencia had one tackle, Ben Gray had two tackles and Weber had two tackles.
Piggee made one interception and had both a punt return and a kickoff return.
“Our defense is swarming to the ball and making the opposing offense pay for every yard,” Schroeder said.
“Our defensive staff has done a great job - the boys have gotten better each week and will need to perform even better this week against Union Mine.”
Galt, who is now 3-2 and 1-0 in league, will take on a Diamondback team that has just one win under its belt (1-4 overall and 0-2 in the SVC) in the Warriors’ homecoming game at 7:30 p.m.
