The Galt Warriors’ two touchdowns in the first quarter last Thursday cemented a 13-7 win over Lodi and allowed them to have the advantage throughout their second straight win.
The Warriors successfully stopped Lodi’s offense while scoring touchdowns both in the air and on the ground in the first half, not letting Lodi’s ball cross into the end zone until a play in the fourth quarter.
Danny Balcorta ran for a 70-yard touchdown to give Galt a 7-0 lead with 8:12 left in the first quarter and Auston Solway threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Zack Alcoriza with seconds left in the quarter for 13-0 lead.
The win left Galt with a 2-0 record after defeating Placer in week one 39-13.
Galt head coach Tim Cobleigh said that giving their full effort helped the Warriors seal their win at the Grape Bowl in Lodi.
“I think we really come out firing hard, the offensive line getting their blocks and we got them rocking. We were blowing in the right direction and we got on the board,” Cobleigh said after the game.
The Flames’ possessions never lasted long and when they did get in close proximity to the end zone, their scoring opportunities were dashed by the Warriors’ defense.
Christian Guardado knocked a 25-yard Lodi pass into the end zone loose with 6:56 left in the second quarter.
On Lodi’s next possession, Lodi ran out of downs on Galt’s 19-yard line with 2:17 left in the half.
The Flames came alive in the fourth quarter, when they scored their only touchdown and came close to running the ball in, but were stopped by the Warriors.
The Flames scored on a touchdown pass with 7:01 to come within 13-7, and ran the ball to the 18-yard line on their next possession.
Lodi would take losses on its next two possessions, however, before making two incomplete passes that would lead to a Galt possession with 3:34 left.
“I’d have to say that our scrimmage teams in practice, both on offense and defense is what’s making our starting teams work. I have to give this win to the guys on scrimmage ‘o’ and scrimmage defense ‘cause that’s what made these guys perform tonight,” said Cobleigh.
“We knew that they were going to counter on us and we knew that if they could get the counter going they’d stick with it. We kept putting on a pass rush and making sure our dbs and safeties were where they were supposed to be in the passing lane,” Cobleigh said.
The Warriors will look to make it a three-game win streak when they take on Bear Creek Thursday at Warrior Stadium at 6 p.m.
