An unearned run was enough to put Union Mine on top in the fourth inning of last Wednesday’s contest at Galt Community Park, before the Diamondbacks added four more insurance runs in the late innings to seal a 7-2 win.
Christian Struthers broke up a 2-2 tie with his RBI single in the fourth inning off reliever J.J. Martinez, scoring Spencer McKenzie, who had reached base after being hit by a Nikko Garcia pitch.
The Diamondbacks had led 2-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, where the Warriors scored two runs to tie the game.
Brent Harrison walked with the bases loaded to score Garcia, who reached base on a single.
After a fielder’s choice resulted in Joey Ruiz out at home during Matt Barsetti’s at-bat, Mario Portillo walked with the bases loaded to tie the score.
In the fourth inning, the Diamondbacks added an insurance run on outfielder Max Hemington’s RBI single, which scored McKenzie for a 4-2 lead.
Union Mine then scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Chris Kordakis hit an infield single that advanced Tyler Drogin to second base.
Drogin then scored during Clayton Nutting’s at bat on a fielding error that made it a 5-2 game, before Nutting hit an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Jared McVey then hit an RBI single to wrap up the Diamondbacks’ scoring at 7-2.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with two outs on a single by Garcia, a double by Cole Rasmussen, and an intentional walk to Harrison, but could not capitalize.
Offense was a weak part of the Warriors’ game Wednesday, as they produced multiple hits in an inning just twice against starter Kordakis and reliever Will Nutting.
Garcia led the Warriors at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run, Rasmussen was 2 for 4 with a double and a run, and Ruiz was 1 for 3, and Portillo was 1 for 3 with a walk.
“We had a lot of opportunities, just like they did; we didn’t take advantage,” Galt head coach Joe Garcia said.
“That’s the difference of the game. We made mistakes, gave them base runners and they made key hits. We just have to be more consistent,” Garcia said.

The Warriors scored one run in the both of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Falcons, scored two runs in the fourth inning, and one in the seventh for the win.
