As if his complete game wasn’t enough, Galt senior pitcher Brent Harrison worked enough magic at the plate to help himself offensively, as well.
Harrison belted his second home run of the season, hit five RBIs, and was 3 for 4 in leading the Warriors to a 9-4 win over Union Mine Friday.
The Warriors scored their first run in the third inning, one more in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Union Mine then scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning, before both teams rallied in the seventh inning.
The Warriors scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead, and Union Mine answered back with three runs in the bottom half to end the game 9-4.
Taylor Peasha had one hit, two RBIs and two walks in five plate appearances; Joe Setum had one hit, one RBI, one run; and Cole Rasmussen had two hits, two runs and a walk in five plate appearances to lead the Warriors.
J.J. Martinez had a double and a run in four plate appearances; Joey Ruiz had one hit, two runs and a walk in five plate appearances; Matt Barsetti had a double; and Nikko Garcia scored a run.
On the mound, Harrison gave up two runs and two unearned runs on nine hits and one walk, and struck out seven in seven innings.
Wednesday
Galt High School’s varsity baseball program would have enjoyed a sweep against Oak Ridge, normally one of the Sierra Valley Conference’s top teams to beat.
Last Wednesday, however, the Warriors couldn’t get a big enough rally going to accomplish that task.
Oak Ridge pitcher Max Everingham shut out the Warriors 6-0, giving Oak Ridge its first win against Galt this season.
Everingham, a junior lefthander, pitched a complete game and gave up four hits, four walks, and had nine strikeouts.
The Warriors, who had averaged 4.5 runs in their previous six league games, scattered their four hits throughout the game.
Matt Barsetti hit a leadoff single in the fifth inning, and David Jiminez came in to the game as a pinch runner for Barsetti.
Everingham got the next three batters out, however, to end the inning.
The Warriors had perhaps their best chance to put a run on the board in the sixth inning.
With one out, Taylor Peasha hit a single to put a runner on base.
After Peasha stole second, Mario Portillo walked to put runners on first and second.
Nikko Garcia then flew out to Oak Ridge centerfielder Jeff McKenzie and Everingham got J.J. Martinez out to end the inning.
Joey Ruiz singled in the seventh inning to complete the Warriors’ hits.
Oak Ridge scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, added another run on a RBI single Sean Dewattville hit to drive in Jake Schu, who had been hit by a pitch.
After starting pitcher Martinez put runners on base in the sixth inning, Peasha took over on the mound and gave up an RBI single to Taylor Reibin for a 5-0 lead.
Kevin Stockam and Cameron Campbell, who both scored on Reibin’s hit, had been at second and third after a botched pickoff attempt at second base.
Reibin then scored on an RBI single by Dewattville to complete Oak Ridge’s scoring.
“Our batters were just not sharp today,” Galt head coach Joe Garcia said. “Offensively and defensively, we were not gelling very well.”
“It was a tough loss more because we didn’t score,” Garcia said. “We had an opportunity to score, we just couldn’t get them in and make the plays we wanted to.”
