Two hundred eighty-three baseball players and their coaches were introduced Saturday morning at Harvey Park, marking the official start to Galt Youth Baseball’s season.
Happy, enthusiastic players big and small ran across home plate as each team in the minors, majors, and farm leagues was introduced, down to the last player.
The ceremony preceded 10 games that were held Saturday, including three majors games, three farm games, and four minors games played at different parks, including Harvey Park.
Dodgers pitcher A.J. Vann, who plays in the minors division for GYB, received a special honor when he was acknowledged by Cal Ripken Baseball representatives for hitting three home runs in one game last season.
Among Cal Ripken players in northern California, plus four western states, no other player has hit as many home runs in a game, Bill Bump said Saturday.
Bump presented Vann with a plaque commemorating his achievement during the opening ceremonies.
Galt Youth Baseball’s all-new board members were introduced to players and their families as well, representing new leadership for the 2008 season.
All 19 board members were introduced, including GYB president Jim Tyler and vice president Bob Byrd, secretary Chris Niederhauser, treasurer John Wise, and registrar Marla Vann.
The league representatives include Babe Ruth representative Lauren Vann, major league representative Steve Justice, minor league representative Mike Vierra, and farm league representative Robert Porter.
Dave Aubrey is the publicity coordinator, Romie Perez is head umpire, Jerry Woodall is head scorekeeper, Ed Evans is the field maintenance manager, and Aaron Harmon is insurance coordinator for GYB.
Craig Thomas is GYB’s equipment manager, Laura Chano is the fundraising coordinator, Lisa Perez is the snack bar coordinator, and Kevin Lincomfelt is the head Web master.
Galt Youth Baseball will be hosting a spaghetti feed April 5 at the Herald Barn at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Laura Chano at (916) 464-2806.
