Freedom and versatility are two words new Galt varsity girls soccer coach Brendan Moore used last week to describe the Lady Warriors’ style of play.
Galt players are adjusting to different positions on the field during practice, and that ability has allowed the Lady Warriors to become stronger both offensively and defensively.
“I’m getting used to who can play where and when, and what I was impressed with was their versatility and their ability to adapt,” Moore said last Wednesday after Galt’s first preseason game.
“What we do in practice is game situations, small-sided games where the kids are used to working with each other, used to finding each other,” Moore said.
That practice has paid off.
Moore has found that his players understand that they are not confined to just one position on the field. They are using that to their advantage in game situations.
“The key to that is their skill, communication, and what we talked about today, freedom,” Moore said. “We have freedom to go back and forth, not just ‘I’m the center forward, therefore I’m the center forward.’ The girls are starting to learn that,” said Moore.
Just over half of the team is made of returning players, while nine of the 20 players are newcomers.
The Lady Warriors have seven seniors, one freshman, four sophomores and eight juniors.
Some of Galt’s returning players include junior Sydney Rasmussen, who led the 2007 Galt team with five goals, senior goalkeeper Lauren Coray, and Trini Gallo, who led the team in assists last year.
Coray will share goalkeeping duties with Sam Chadwell, filling the position left vacant by Kassandra Rogers, who graduated last year.
Just as Galt’s JV girls soccer roster have played together on other teams, so have many of the varsity Lady Warriors.
“A lot of the girls have played club ball together, so they are used to each other on other teams and other formats,” Moore said.
The Lady Warriors opened up their season with a 4-1 win over Lodi last Wednesday, giving Galt a 1-0 record in the preseason.
Galt scored three goals in the first half and its last goal in the second half.
Moore said that the Lady Warriors did a good job of executing what they learned in practice during Wednesday’s game.
“All the things that we worked on in practice are being implemented in the game, coupled with the fact that, no matter where I seem to put them, they’re performing well,” Moore said.
“Good, solid defense always leads to the attack, and that’s what we’re most impressed with.”
Kim Hernandez scored two goals, Colleen Moore scored one goal, and Sydney Rasmussen scored one goal.
Regan Steele had one assist, Trini Gallo had two assists, and Rasmussen had one assist.
Galt will play its next game tomorrow evening at home against Tokay at 6 p.m.

JV soccer gets win in first preseason game

Having played soccer together on other teams prior to this season, Galt’s JV girls’ soccer program opened up the soccer preseason last Wednesday with an important attribute- chemistry.
Many of the girls on the team have either played together on last year’s Galt freshman soccer team, or on a club soccer team.
The result is a team that has started out with a higher level of communication than expected by Galt head coach Oscar Corona, and that bodes well for the 2008 season.
“I’m really happy with the chemistry. It usually takes me three or four games to get the girls to buy into the chemistry thing, but this year, they bought into it right away,” Corona said Wednesday evening.
The JV roster is complete with new and returning athletes, including several freshmen, continuing the trend in Galt girls’ soccer of an overflow of young talent.
Twelve players on the current Galt roster are sophomores, and five players are freshmen.
“There are quite a few of them that played together on the freshmen team, and they play together with the club team, also, so that’s why they’re really comfortable with each other right now,” said Corona.
The Lady Warriors defeated Lodi 7-0 in front of a home crowd, opening its season with 1-0 record.
Galt’s passing game was key to the Lady Warriors’ win.
The communication between the Lady Warriors kept the ball away from their own goal, and allowed Galt to increase its chances of scoring.
“This was our first game, and everybody was talking. It just happened by itself,” Corona said.
Galt played in the Cal Springs Classic over the weekend and played at Franklin Monday.
The Lady Warriors will next play at home at Tokay today at 4 p.m.
