Galt’s freshman girls soccer team won second place at the Cal Springs tournament over the weekend in Marysville and defeated three junior varsity teams along the way.
The Lady Warriors won their first three games of the tournament, which was held Friday and concluded Saturday.
All four of the teams Galt faced were JV teams, and Galt defeated three of the four to reach second place.
Galt defeated Bear River 3-1, with two goals scored by Stacy Iniguez and one by Taylor Oberle.
Galt shut out Yuba City 5-0 after Stacy Iniguez scored two goals, Bryana Giordano scored two, and Kassie Lizama scored one goal.
On Saturday, the Lady Warriors defeated Vanden 1-0 on Amanda Eckroth’s goal.
Benicia shut out Galt 3-0 in the championship game later that day.
On Monday, Galt hosted Placer in a game it easily won, 9-1.
The win boosted Galt’s record to 4-1 overall, and gave Galt a 1-0 record in the Women’s Alliance League.
Galt shut out Placer 5-0 in the first half, and scored its last four goals after Placer scored in the second half.
Amanda Ekroth led Galt with four goals, Stacy Iniguez scored two goals, and Taylor Oberle, Ashi Roberts, and Bryana Giordano each scored one goal for Galt.
In just five games, the Lady Warriors already have 18 goals, says head coach Eugen Deaconu.
“They’re a really good team, they know each other well. They’ve been playing together for a while, from what I’ve heard,” Deaconu said Monday. “It shows on the field, they pass really well, they have fun.”
With all of their wins coming on two and a half days of practice, Galt seems off to a good start.
“They covered the field really well, looked for the open player,” Deaconu said of the first half.
Galt’s next game is at home today against Rio Americano High School at 4 p.m.
2007 Galt Gator of the Year to be sports ambassador
Ricky Hegner, the 2007 Galt Gator of the Year, has been named a People to People Sports Ambassador.
Gator head coach Kalah Westlynn, a former sports ambassador herself, said in nominating Ricky, “For the past three years I have had the honor to coach Ricky. He has proven to be a leader and has a strong drive to compete. I see this opportunity as a key to a successful future in swimming. Just experiencing the different cultures and to have the experience to train and compete internationally is amazing.”
Ricky is also a member of the Galt High School swim team.
Galt Warriors head swim coach Shannon Potter said he was pleased to recommend Ricky to the People to People program.
Coach Potter said that he has known Richard for more than six years as the coach of Galt’s Otters, a USA Swimming sanctioned team.
“Ricky works hard, is determined to improve, and loves the sport. Swimming internationally will be a great experience for him,” coach Potter said.
Founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, People to People International is a not-for-profit organization funded through program fees, membership dues and donations.
Sports Ambassadors pay their own way. This year’s trip is to Holland and will cost more than $6,000.
Fund raising and donations are two of the main means the young people use to pay for this opportunity.
With fund raising opportunities, or to make a tax-deductible donation to People to People International, contact George Hegner at P.O. Box 654 Galt, CA 95632 or call (209) 745-9079.
