Four Galt wrestlers qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Division II Tournament after finishing in the top four at the Sierra Valley Conference Tournament last Saturday.
Aric Codog, Dylan Davidson, Andrew Moses, and Kellen Riley all placed in the top four in their weight class at the SVC Tournament finals, which automatically moves them on to the Division II Tournament.
Riley earned second place in the heavyweight division in the league finals after falling to Ponderosa’s Paul Buchanan in the championship match.
Codog, a Galt freshman, won third place in the 114-pound weight class at the league finals, and Arian Lucataro, also a freshman, won fifth place in the finals.
Davidson earned fourth place, and Moses also finished fourth after getting injured in the third place 142-pound weight class finals match.
Riley, a senior, held a 4-1 advantage in Saturday’s heavyweight championship match against Buchanan in the first period.
Buchanan later tied the score 4-4 and pinned Riley with 0.5 seconds left in the first period to win the final championship of the evening.
Riley advanced to the championships after pinning an opponent in the morning round.
Codog defeated Ponderosa’s Alex Greybill in the third-place 114-pound match with a pin in the third quarter.
Greybill had led 9-5 before Codog pinned in the third period.
Lucataro pinned his opponent from Vista del Lago in the second round of the fifth-place match.
In addition to the four who qualified, six Galt wrestlers qualified as alternates for the Division II Tournament.
Lucataro, Leland McDonald, Zach Davidson, J.D. Johnson, Tyler Hernandez, and John Brower will attend the tournament and will be able to compete if someone in their weight class cannot compete for any reason.
With multiple Galt wrestlers earning their way to the finals and the Division II Tournament, Galt wrestling coach Dan Lucero said he was happy with the effort of his wrestlers.“We had some real surprises today. Our guys are stepping up and wrestling hard, Kellen Riley wrestling for first place, Aric Codog wrestling for third place as a first-year wrestler. That means a lot for us,” Lucero said inside Oak Ridge High School’s gym, where the tournament took place.
The Warriors’ freshman wrestlers, several of whom qualified for the division tournament, wrestled well, said Lucero.
“All of our freshman wrestling at the varsity level brought their A-game today and they all left it out on the mat. I’m very pleased with everything they did,” Lucero said.
The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section/ Les Schwab Tires Division II Tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento.
Friday’s opening ceremonies begin at 10:45 a.m. and the first championship round of wrestling will begin at 11 a.m.

Nizzoli signs letter of intent to play soccer at California State University, Fresno

Molly Nizzoli, a Galt High School senior, officially signed a letter of intent to play soccer at California State University, Fresno last Wednesday at Warrior Gym.
Nizzoli, who played varsity soccer for Galt for two seasons, accepted a 75 percent scholarship to Fresno State and made it official with family and friends at her signing.
Fresno State contacted Nizzoli last year, and Nizzoli verbally committed to the Bulldogs last March.
Nizzoli, who is currently playing club soccer with a Folsom team, said that she hopes to play soccer for all four years in college.
Nizzoli led the Lady Warriors varsity soccer program in scoring, total points, and shots as a sophomore during the 2005-06 season.

Freshman Lady Warriors earn close win over Cordova to end season

When Cordova pulled even with the freshman Lady Warriors with just over two minutes left in the teams’ final game of the basketball season, Alyssa Cuevas followed up with a basket of her own.
Her shot proved to be the winning basket in the Lady Warriors’ 42-40 win over Cordova.
Galt ended its season with a 7-4 record in the Sierra Valley Conference and a 19-6 record overall.
While Galt led for most of Thursday’s game, the score remained close throughout the game.
Galt’s largest lead was a seven-point advantage, which it held in the second and third quarters.
Cordova caught up with the Lady Warriors several times in the second half, and the Lady Lancers took the lead three times.
Cordova never held more than a one-point lead, however, and its last lead came within the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, 37-36.
Joeylee Maoimone scored the next basket, and gave the Lady Warriors a 38-37 lead with 5:05 left.
After Cuevas scored the last basket, Cordova turned the ball over, and committed an offensive foul in both of its resulting possessions.
The turnovers allowed Galt’s lead to stay intact, and gave the Lady Warriors a win on their home court in their final game this season.
“It was a good year. They improved a lot, and we’re proud of them,” Galt head coach Holli Wood said Thursday after the game.
“They’ve improved tremendously. They know how to play good defense, they understand what we’re looking for,” co-head coach Kaitlin Sayler said.
“They’re all team players, no individual games, they all help each other out,” Wood said of their players.

JV boys wrap up season with a win against Cordova

Galt’s JV Warriors were joined in their final game by one of their teammates who played in just his second game of the league season and enjoyed a big win in the process.
David Winsor returned to the Warriors after sitting out virtually the entire Sierra Valley Conference season with an injury, and celebrated an 85-68 win over Cordova.
Winsor scored 15 points in his return to the Warriors, which ended its season with a winning record and an all-around successful year.
While Cordova went on a scoring run that left them trailing by just four points at halftime, Galt went on a 15-0 run in the third quarter and never looked back.
After coming within three points at the start of the third quarter, Cordova trailed 45-33 after Haran Piggee scored a three-point field goal.
The Warriors then went on a 15-0 run that left them with a 60-35 lead with 1:29 left.
That run gave Galt enough of a lead to weather a 24-point fourth quarter offensive output by Cordova.
Galt’s 22 points in the fourth quarter helped the Warriors easily defeat the Lancers, while sending the Warriors home with a 6-6 SVC record.
The Warriors had started to pull away from the Lancers in the second quarter, before Cordova closed in the scoring gap.
A basket by Josh Dela Cruz gave Galt a 31-19 lead, but Cordova scored the next eight points to pull within 31-27.
After both teams traded turnovers, the half ended with the Warriors ahead 33-29.
Josh Dela Cruz led the way with 38 points, and Haran Piggee and Jake Middleton both had 11 for Galt.
Galt head coach Jeff Gonzalvo said he believed Dela Cruz’s 38 points were a season high.
“I would just like to say, regardless of our record, I enjoyed every moment of this season. This is a very talented group of young men and will go far in anything they try to achieve,” Gonzalvo said Tuesday. “I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to coach this great group of young men.”
The 2007-08 season was Gonzalvo’s first season as Galt’s JV boys coach.
“I would also like to recognize Abram Piggee for setting the tone on the defensive end of the court. My hat’s off to a great bunch. I look forward to coaching them again in the near future,” Gonzalvo said.

Galt Heat earns first win

The Galt Heat played two games Saturday, and earned their first victory, in the process.
The Heat tied Modesto 3-3 and defeated Lodi 6-2 in their second game.
The girls did a wonderful job in both games, according to their coach, Paul Oliveira, who also noted his players’ potential and said he is proud of the whole team.
The team consists of Michelle Mulrooney, Elizabeth Barron, Kayla Sharpnack, Mikala Ginni, Michala Davidson, Krystal Valencia, Tamra Hobday, Janelle Rodriguez, Brieana DeMelo, Briana Zomora Morgan, Megan Oliveira, and Jenna Stiehr.
The team has two more games before it plays in the upcoming soccer Jamboree.
