The Galt Warriors’ two touchdowns in the second half of their game against Lodi certainly helped, but Friday night Lodi’s ground offense overwhelmed and led the Flames past the Warriors 34-18.
Lodi running back/defensive back Jordan Perkins rushed for 243 yards and scored two of the Flames’ five touchdowns to give Lodi a 2-0 record in the football preseason and drop the Warriors to 0-2.
Penalties and trouble converting first downs equaled slow first half results for the Warriors, who struggled to gain yards.
Galt did find some bright moments in the fourth quarter, however, and that led to double-digits on the scoreboard for the first time this season.
“Our offense in the second half moved the ball very well, and we feel that we can continue to improve greatly this week,” Galt head coach Warren Schroeder said Tuesday.
“Our goal is to establish offensive drives through ball control and execution that result in putting points on the board. We hope to have our offense polished by the time we face our first league opponent, Vista del Lago.”
Lodi scored touchdowns on a Patrick Armstrong one-yard run and a Perkins run to take a 14-0 lead before the Warriors scored in the second quarter.
Several plays into a Lodi possession, David Petkovich intercepted a Lodi pass and scored a 25-yard touchdown with 4:56 left to put the Warriors on the board at 14-6
Lodi scored on the next possession when Armstrong scored on a two-yard run with 2:02 left to give the Flames a 20-6 lead.
After Ryan Pudwell intercepted a Galt pass, the Flames eventually scored on an Alex Santiago touchdown run to put the Flames up 27-6 with 10:01 left.
The Warriors answered back when Trevor Alcoriza scored a touchdown with 33 seconds left to come within 27-12.
Perkins scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard run, followed by a Mike Toon PAT kick to put Lodi up 34-12.
After the Warriors traded possessions with Lodi without scoring, Galt scored once more with under 20 seconds left.
Abram Piggee scored on a long run with 17.4 seconds left to end the game.
Quarterback Robert Byrd rushed seven times for 23 yards and completed four of 12 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Alcoriza rushed eight times for 85 yards and had seven tackles for Galt.
Piggee had two receptions for 65 yards, five tackles and a touchdown.
Jeff Weber had two receptions for 12 yards, and Eric Toscano led the Warriors with 10 tackles, and Adam Russell rounded out the tackling leaders with seven.
Joey Ruiz had one sack and four tackles for Galt.
The Warriors will host River City Friday at Warrior Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Galt is focusing on a physical, fast-paced game, said Schroeder, as River City uses its ground offense as a key part of its game.
“We had to make some adjustments defensively for River City this week since they operate in a run-oriented offensive system,” Schroeder said.
“This week it is simple, we have to play tough-nosed football for four quarters because they will focus on running right at us.”
River City is 1-1 after defeating Highlands last week.
