The freshman Lady Warriors were more than ready to get back on the court last Saturday.
More than a week after their last game, Galt proved that point by holding the lead the entire length of the game.
Defense helped the Lady Warriors to a win in their last game before starting the league season.
Galt defeated Elk Grove 61-21 in their last game of the preseason inside Warrior Gym.
Defense was the key for Galt, which held Elk Grove to just two points in the second quarter and the fourth quarter.
Galt had several days off for both Christmas and New Year’s, according to coaches Kaitlin Sayler and Holli Wood.
The breaks slowed Galt for a bit in its first practices back from the break, according to Wood and Sayler.
However, the Lady Warriors had adjusted to their practice schedule by Saturday and were completely prepared for Elk Grove.
Galt averaged over 15 points a quarter, while holding Elk Grove to 5.25 points per quarter at the same time.
Elk Grove either missed its shots or was forced to turn the ball over multiple times, and Galt was given extra chances to increase its lead.
Wood and Sayler said that defense was the key to Saturday’s win, and that while the Lady Warriors didn’t know much about Elk Grove before the game, they applied what they learned in practice over the break.
The Lady Warriors will have a healthy roster to start the league season, says Wood and Sayler.
That advantage will be important, as they face Oak Ridge in the Sierra Valley Conference opener today at Galt High School.
The Lady Warriors will play two games this week, and will travel to Union Mine High School Friday.

Weather wipes out several Warrior games at GHS

Forceful winds and heavy rain interfered with daily schedules during Friday’s big storm, including three Galt High School basketball games that were to be held at Warrior Gym.
The boys freshmen, JV and varsity basketball teams’ last preseason games were canceled due to the bad weather, which affected the school’s power and caused leaks inside Warrior Gym, according to GHS athletic director Greg Sloan.
The Warriors were scheduled to play McNair High School from Stockton in one last practice game before the start of the league season.
The power went out at GHS in the morning, according to Sloan, and Galt was unsure if the power would return in time for the freshman boys’ game, which was scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
That factor, combined with the leaks in the gym, prompted Galt to cancel the game as a precaution.
Galt could reschedule against McNair, but it is not clear whether that will be the case.
The girls’ freshmen and JV basketball games against Elk Grove on Saturday were unaffected, as power was restored and the gym was prepared for the afternoon games.
Preseason games do not have an effect on power rankings, so a replacement game will take place only if both teams’ schedules allow.
The Warriors played their first game of the Sierra Valley Conference yesterday against Oak Ridge.
They will play their first home game tomorrow against the Union Mine Diamondbacks.
The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free soda in a promotion sponsored by Galt High School’s Booster Club.

One day after a power outage led to the cancellation of all three of Galt’s boys basketball games, the Lady Warriors took to the court and shone with its offensive power against Elk Grove High School.
Galt’s JV girls basketball program took care of Elk Grove Saturday at Warrior Gym with a 53-35 win to end the preseason.
The Lady Warriors a close game into an easy win as they worked some practice into the last weekend before the start of the Sierra Valley Conference season.
The season starts today with a home game against Oak Ridge, at 6 p.m. or after the freshmen girls’ game.
The game remained close until the third quarter, when Galt started to pull away from Elk Grove.
The score was close in the first two quarters, with Galt and Elk Grove tied 16-16 with 4:08 left in the second quarter.
Galt scored the next seven points, however, and by the beginning of the third quarter had a double-digit lead.
The 10-point lead early in the quarter grew to a 42-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Galt head coach Mark Blasingame said that the team is healthy going into the league opener, and that his players had several days of practice to prepare for Oak Ridge after their game against Elk Grove.
Blasingame noted that Galt is in good shape heading into tonight’s game, and will have a good mix of players to challenge traditionally tough opponents such as Oak Ridge and Christian Brothers.
