Steals and some quick thinking kept Galt in what was a seemingly out-of-reach game last Wednesday, in round one of the Lady Trojan Toss Up Tournament.
The Lady Warriors came back from a 10-point deficit with less than a minute left to come within three points with 9.1 seconds left.
While Galt came close, Placer had possession with the remaining time on the clock, and ran out the clock to seal a 63-60 win over Galt.
The loss sent Galt to a second-round match-up against the loser of the El Camino/Rocklin contest.
The JV game was the first of three games featuring Galt teams Wednesday.
The tournament started last Tuesday, with some teams playing opening day.
Other teams, including Galt, started the tournament Wednesday, and played their second round games Friday, with all semifinal and championship games taking place Saturday.
The JV Lady Warriors played first, followed by varsity and then the freshmen Lady Warriors.
Galt’s comeback was huge, given that it had been down by 17 points in the third quarter.
Galt cut that deficit to 10 points with a seven-point run at the end of the quarter to trail 47-37.
The Lady Warriors went back to trailing by as much as 17 points in the fourth quarter, but gradually cut the deficit to 63-57 with 11.1 seconds left.
After a timeout, Mallory Lemieux was fouled and cut the score to 63-60 with 9.1 seconds left.
Alyssa Thomas led Galt with 16 points, Mallory Lemieux had 13 points, and Amanda Eckroth had 11 points.
Galt will have five days off from basketball before it faces Stagg on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The game is the last preseason game before the Sierra Valley Conference season starts Jan. 9 at home against Oak Ridge.

Offense and defense both paved the way for Galt’s freshman Lady Warriors last Wednesday, as they defeated Placer 59-23 at Oak Ridge High School.
The game was the opener of the Lady Trojan Toss Up for both teams, and the Lady Warriors made it an easy day for themselves.
Galt held Placer to four points in the first and fourth quarters, while averaging 14.75 points a quarter.
Galt’s offense was solid during the first half, and a combination of baskets and foul shots put the Lady Warriors up 23-10 at halftime.
Galt went on a 13-point run at the end of the first quarter and halfway into the second quarter.
In the second half, Galt then went on a second long streak with an 18-point run at the end of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter.
The win moved Galt into the second round of the winner’s bracket, against El Camino.
The teams played Friday night and, depending on the outcome, the Lady Warriors would have ended up in the championship game or the third place game Saturday afternoon.
Galt’s next game is a home game against Stagg High School Friday evening at 4 p.m.
Galt will then play Elk Grove in the final game of the preseason Jan. 5.
The Lady Warriors will open up the Sierra Valley Conference season with a home game against Oak Ridge.
Varsity Warriors use early lead to defeat Pioneer
Galt defeated Pioneer 69-56 last Wednesday, and used an early lead to dominate Pioneer.
Brent Harrison scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the first quarter as Galt jumped out to an early lead and held off Pioneer Wednesday night.
The Warriors set a season high for points in a quarter, scoring 27 to take an 11-point lead. Sterling Shells and Harrison each had three three-pointers in the quarter.
Shells added 10 of his 21 points in the third quarter, as the Warriors built an 18-point lead and withstood a late charge to take the win.
Austin Phillips contributed seven points and Cole Rasmussen and Jonathan Schantz each scored five.
“We came out firing early and set a good pace,” Galt coach Steve Box said. “It’s tough to be hot like that every night, but it was fun to watch.”
Galt improved to 5-5 on the season. The Warriors travel to Whitney High in Rocklin next Thursday to face Center at the Whitney Tournament.
GHS wrestling to compete in Lemoore Bash
Galt High School’s varsity wrestling program will head to the Lemoore Bash Friday and will wrap up its annual trip the next day.
The tournament is hosted by Lemoore High School, which is in Lemoore, south of Fresno.
After the Lemoore Bash, Galt’s varsity wrestling team will attend the Fazel Khan Invitational on Jan. 5.
That is the team’s last preseason tournament before the start of the Sierra Valley League season.
Galt will open up its season with a home match against Oak Ridge High School on Jan. 8.
Freshman Warriors shut Pioneer down with 50-point win
With a win that would put any team in a good mood for the holidays, Galt won its last game before the start of winter break last Wednesday, and defeated Pioneer 76-26 in Woodland.
Josh Barnhart led the Warriors with 25 points, Jason Lowery had 21 points, and Sam Grone had 10 rebounds.
Galt also played El Dorado and wrapped up a 21-point win.
Galt now has a record of 6-5 in the preseason.
The Warriors will travel to the Whitney Christmas Classic next Thursday, after several days off for the beginning of winter break.
In January, the Warriors will play their last preseason game at home against McNair.
The Warriors will start the Sierra Valley Conference season Jan.8 with an away game at Oak Ridge.
The Warriors will then host Union Mine Jan. 10, Vista del Lago Jan. 14, and Christian Brothers Jan. 15, before traveling to Ponderosa Jan. 17.
A home game against Cordova will wrap up the first half of the season.
Galt’s wins came against Stagg, Chavez, El Dorado, Vacaville, Pioneer and one in the Franklin tournament.
Galt’s five losses were to Granite Bay (twice), Lincoln, Bear Creek, and Franklin.
