A late effort to catch up to the Vacaville Bulldogs didn’t quite pan out for the Warriors Monday night, but instead gave them a 40-37 loss.
The Warriors were within striking distance for the entire game at Vacaville High School, and were down by six points with less than three minutes left.
The score remained 40-34 Vacaville until a Vacaville offensive foul gave theWarriors possession with 1:10 on the clock.
Brent Harrison then hit a three-point shot to bring Galt within 40-37.
Galt was given a chance to tie the score when Vacaville turned the ball over with 16 seconds.
After a Galt timeout with 10.2 seconds left, Harrison attempted another three-point shot to tie but it did not go in.
Harrison led the Warriors with 12 points, Joe Setum had nine points, and Austin Phillips had six points.
“We didn’t do enough to win,” Galt head coach Steve Box said after the game.
“We took away their inside players, but we couldn’t put the ball inside. We have a lot of work to do, we’re still very methodical,” Box said.
The loss followed the South Lake Tahoe Tournament, in which Galt earned its first win of the preseason.
It’s not always easy getting a season off and running, but that is what Galt’s varsity boys’ basketball program is in the process of doing.
The Warriors had trouble executing both offense and defense in its first official game of the season against Granite Bay, losing 66-50.
The problems allowed Granite Bay to increase its lead from nine points in the first quarter to 23 points at half time, a lead that proved difficult to change by much.
Consistency was a problem for the Warriors, who occasionally made a three-point play and made it to the free throw line.
The transition from earning the trip to the free throw line and then making foul shots was a problem, however, and Galt found itself lingering in the 20-point deficit range for a good part of the second half.
Scoring was a problem early in the game.
Galt started out with a close score and took an 8-6 lead in the first quarter.
The Warriors had trouble getting the ball to the hoop shortly thereafter, and did not score for the remaining five minutes in the quarter.
Granite Bay, meanwhile, took advantage of Galt’s drought and scored 17 points to take a 25-8 lead.
“From every facet of the game, we didn’t play well,” Galt head coach Steve Box said after the game.
“There’s kind of a snowball effect, but that’s one of our challenges. We need to adjust,” Box said of what can happen when one thing goes wrong during a game.
Box noted that the Grizzlies were not at full strength last Tuesday, and still managed to win.
“Granite Bay is missing seven guys. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t respond to that,” Box said.
