In a game where errors can easily shape the outcome, the Galt High School Lady Warriors are working on not falling into that trap.
Over the past few weeks, the varsity volleyball team at Galt has worked on being consistent and not letting mistakes beat them at their own game.
Players and head coach Eric Weber had not seen results in their first four matches of the season, leading to an 0-4 start to the Sierra Valley Conference season.
Last Thursday, against Cordova High School, that leaf turned as Galt earned its first league win.
“The line-up that was used on Thursday night played really well. We have been talking all season long about playing consistent and limiting mistakes,” Galt head coach Eric Weber said Monday.
The Lady Warriors won the first game 25-10, won the second game 25-17, and won the third game 25-10 over Cordova.
Unforced errors plagued the Lady Lancers as players hit balls out of bounds, hit balls into the net, and watched Galt block multiple shots to limit Cordova points.
“We did a good job of making Cordova earn their points and not scoring too many points for them,” said Weber.
Multiple Galt players led the scoring Thursday night.
“Middle hitter, Alexis Cuevas, and opposite hitter, Sabrina Dahl, led the way for our offense,” Weber said. “Alexis had a match high eight kills and Sabrina recorded six kills. Neither one of them had any hitting errors.”
Weber said that although the team had seen Cordova play in the preseason, Galt didn’t know much about the team until Thursday.
“We saw Cordova at a pre-season tournament. We did not end up playing them, but our team watched them play long enough to know that they were a quality volleyball team. We knew that we would have to play well to beat them,” Weber said.
In addition to Cuevas’ eight kills and Dahl’s six kills, middle hitter Becca McBroom had six blocks and seven kills. Setter Amelia Raquel had 23 assists for Galt.
Galt had been shut out in the first four games of the SVC season, but will try to put more wins on the board when it faces Union Mine, Christian Brothers, Ponderosa and Cordova in its last four games.
Galt currently is in good shape physically, with no injuries, which allows the team to concentrate on doing their best in the second half of the SVC season.
“Team health is good. Physically, we are fine, and the win was much needed for our confidence.”

Win over Union Mine keeps Galt in third place

A win over Union Mine High School kept Galt in contention for the postseason Monday night, and kept the Warriors in third place.
Galt defeated Union Mine 3-0 Monday night in the El Dorado Hills, earning their fourth win of the Sierra Valley Conference season and tying them with Christian Brothers.
Both teams own a 4-2-1 record and are behind Ponderosa 4-1-1 and Oak Ridge 5-1-1.
German Valasquez, Albert Noriega and Edgar Munoz all scored goals for Galt, which scored once in the first half and twice in the second half of Monday’s game.
Galt’s next game is today against Christian Brothers in Sacramento.
