Offense and defensive skills will work themselves out in time, but for now, the Warriors have one constant – experience.
Eight seniors lead the way, along with five juniors, who round out a talented cast of both returning players and junior varsity graduates.
In addition to experience, Galt also has strength in its offense.
Senior Brent Harrison was third in shooting on last year’s Galt Warriors team, and junior Sterling Shells had an impressive showing Monday with 15 points, including four three-point shots.
“We have a lot of seniors,” Galt head coach Steve Box said Monday.
Box noted that he will expect his seniors to guide the team, but recognized his whole team’s abilities as well.
“It’s hard being a senior. I expect them to lead the way. It’s a great group,” Box said.
Harrison, Chris Pillsbury, Nick Gamalski, Jonathan Schantz, Heath Garcia, Cole Rasmussen, Sam Mitchell and Micah Piggee round out Galt’s seniors.
Of those players, five players are new to the varsity level.
Piggee, Garcia, Gamalski, Pillsbury, and Schantz are all new to the team, while four of five juniors are new to the varsity level.
Joe Setum, Austin Phillips, Christopher Anslinger, and Ben Gray all played on the junior varsity level last season.
Shells started last season as a JV player, then moved up mid-season to varsity.
Key returning players are Harrison, Shells, and Rasmussen.
“We’re still going through the process,” Box said. “Cole and Brent are good vocal leaders.”
Harrison was third in scoring on the team last season with 254 points and fourth in three-point field goals.
Galt is currently working on multiple skills in practice, including both offense and defense.
“We’re working on a combination of things,” Box said. “Manned defense, and there are some offensive concepts we’re going to put in. It’s still a kind of feeling-out process.”
Galt will host the Realty World Warrior Classic Dec. 6-8, and will play in several other tournaments and individual games before the league season starts.
In addition to the South Lake Tahoe Invitational, Galt will travel to the Whitney Christmas Classic Dec. 27-29.
The Sierra Valley Conference schedule begins in January with an away game against Oak Ridge.
Galt will then have back-to-back home games against Union Mine and Christian Brothers before going on the road again to Ponderosa.
Galt’s second home stand of the league season will be against Cordova and Oak Ridge.
Galt will have one more home game against Ponderosa in early February, before ending the regular season against Cordova.
The SVC Tournament will be held Feb. 13, before the start of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for eligible teams.
While the SVC standings could end up a variety of ways with all of the competition, Galt has several more things going for it.
Four players are at least 6’4” tall, with Phillips and Anslinger topping out the roster at 6’5.
Also, the combination of junior varsity and returning seniors will combine a mix of talented players that could provide a solid footing as the season wears on.
