If anyone predicted the results to last Tuesday’s season-ending game against Cordova, he or she probably didn’t imagine what actually happened.
The game was important to both teams, as both Galt and Cordova’s varsity volleyball teams were hoping for a win in their last game.
The match started out with an easy win by Galt, then flip-flopped as Cordova won the next two games.
Galt then won game four to set up the last game, which, after both teams were tied at 14-14, went all the way to an intense 18-16 win by Cordova.
Galt won game one 25-6, Cordova won 26-24 in game two and 25-21 in game three, and Galt won 25-15 in game four before Cordova won game five.
While Galt kept the score very close in both games two, three, and five, Cordova’s hunger for the win seemed to grow as the evening went on.
While the Lady Lancers had made easy mistakes in game one, Cordova’s game improved immediately one game later.
By the end of the match, Cordova was staying competitive during long rallies and not giving up on shots that it may have before.
“Cordova played a great match. In the end they wanted the win more than we did and were willing to do what it took to get the victory,” Galt head coach Eric Weber said Friday of the game.
The win was the first league win for Cordova in several years, and fell on their senior night, a meaningful victory in more than one way.
Galt had a young lineup this season, with the number of sophomores outnumbering seniors.
While a number of girls had played together in club volleyball, the level of inexperience paired against a tough Sierra Valley Conference made it a challenge for Galt.
“We were a young team this year, especially with only two seniors and five sophomores. We took some lumps this year with some young players in a brutal league. The SVC is the toughest volleyball league in the entire Sac Joaquin Section,” Weber said.
Weber noted that the Sacramento Bee’s Top 10 area volleyball teams included Oak Ridge, Ponderosa, Union Mine, and Christian Brothers, all of which are in the SVC.
The Lady Warriors had their team awards last week, which honored players in various categories.
Senior Kim Briggs won the team MVP award, Sabrina Dahl won the most improved award, and AndreHanchey won the Warrior Pride award.
Weber announced that he will step down as head coach of the varsity team for next season so he can spend time with his family.
“I have two little boys that I want to choose to spend more time with,” Weber said last week.
Weber coached two years at Galt and will continue to coach for the Twin Cities Volleyball Club with his wife, where they are both club directors.
“Hopefully, the experience will pay off next year for these girls as they will be another year older and now knowing what to expect. A lot of the girls wanting to play varsity next year are making plans right now to play club volleyball,” Weber said of his Galt players.
Looking ahead to next year, Weber said that Galt should have its share of talent, as well as its new coach, which as of yet has not been hired yet.
“There should be a lot of talent next year,” Weber said. “A new coach with a fresh attitude and perspective might be a great blessing on this program.”
JV volleyball succumbs to Lancers in final game
The junior varsity girls were in the neighborhood, but couldn’t quite get close enough to come out with a win last Tuesday against Cordova.
Twice, the Lady Warriors either tied or came within a point of Cordova in game two.
Galt tied the score at 12-12, and then trailed 19-18.
With the score tied, Galt accidently served into the net, putting Cordova ahead 13-12.
The Lady Warriors then were the victims when a ball caught up in the rafters of the gym caught Galt off guard when Cordova hit the delayed ball back over the net, boosting the score at 20-18.
Cordova scored four more straight points, taking a 24-18 lead before Galt scored a point.
Cordova then won on a Galt error, 25-19.
In game one, Cordova won 25-12.
“This group of girls have an amazing amount of talent. I look forward to seeing them work on there skills in the off season (many of the girls will be playing on club teams) and expect them to be a great addition to next year’s varsity team,” Galt head coach Becca Dennis said Tuesday.
Galt finished its season with a record of 3-9 in the Sierra Valley Conference and 17-13 overall.
