The Galt Warriors’ offense may not have the size and numbers of Galt’s opponents, but there is a definite improvement in the Warriors.
Galt scored three touchdowns in a game for the first time since a Sept. 21 game against Tokay High School.
Galt has had decent first halves in its last three games, including taking early leads against both Oak Ridge and Ponderosa.
In addition, the Warriors have seemed more patient in the first half during possessions.
During Friday’s homecoming game against Christian Brothers, for example, the Warriors answered the first two touchdowns by the visitors with touchdowns of their own.
Although both Galt’s offense and defense helped to keep the Warriors within two touchdowns at halftime of Friday’s game, the Falcons took advantage of their ability to run the field and won 44-21.
“Our offense has been improving each game and I am proud of the way that our boys have been able to move the ball against stronger teams,” Galt head coach Warren Schroeder said Tuesday.
To stay within decent range of Christian Brothers was an achievement for Galt, as the Falcons came into the game undefeated and tied with Ponderosa for first place in the Sierra Valley Conference.
“Our goal coming into the game was to shutdown the QB Asa Jackson, and I was pleased with the fact that we did that. However, C.B. was able to go to their other talented players and they did a good job of using them effectively,” Schroeder said of the Falcons.
Cole Rasmussen led Galt’s offense with two touchdowns, a touchdown pass, and a pass for a two-point conversion Friday night.
Rasmussen ran for a four-yard touchdown to bring the Warriors within a point at 7-6.
In the second quarter, Rasmussen threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Markus Guerrero, then threw to Joey Ruiz for a two-point conversion play that tied the score at 14-14.
Rasmussen scored again in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run that brought the Warriors within 44-21 after Kevin Moore’s kick.
Marcus McDaniel scored the first touchdown for the Falcons just over a minute into the game with a 49-yard run.
Josh Tucker then made a seven-yard touchdown run with 9:58 on the clock in the second quarter to put the Falcons up 14-6.
Asa Jackson scored a one-yard touchdown run to break the 14-14 tie and give Christian Brothers back the lead after a James Ward kick.
Christian Brothers scored on a touchdown reception in the third quarter coupled with a Ward kick to put the Falcons ahead 28-14, then scored twice more in the third and once in the fourth.
Christian Brothers blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety to bring the score to 30-14, then scored on a big kick return by Larry Morla for a touchdown to make it a 27-14 game.
Christian Brothers scored its last touchdown with 5:52 left and Ward kicked the extra point for a 44-14 lead.
Sam Mitchell was a big part of the Warriors’ offense, making multiple tackles to help stop Christian Brothers in both the first and second halves of the game.
Ruiz, Markus Guerrero, Robert Silva, Tyler Kluender and Trevor Alcoriza also had tackles for Galt.
Galt will travel to Union Mine Friday, to face the Miners, who are also looking for their first league win.
“We are hoping to get a win against a team that will be hungry to get their first victory,” Schroeder said.
“We know they are going to play tough and that we will have to limit our mistakes. We are struggling with more injuries this week, so unfortunately, we are going up with even less players than usual, but the players that are healthy are ready to do their best,” Schroeder said.

Girls golf finishes season with 9-2 record

Herald Sports-
The Galt High School varsity girls golf team finished their season with a 9-2 record and advanced two golfers to the playoffs last week.
Riley Sexton and Kristin Madsen both advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, held Oct. 22, representing a talented Galt team that finished just out of contention for the team playoffs the previous week.
Sexton shot a round of 91 and advanced to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters.
Madsen shot a 104, which was not enough to qualify for the Masters.
Sexton advanced to the Section Masters tournament on Monday at Auburn Country Club and earned a score of 99.
The tournament officially ended the season for the Lady Warriors golf team, who had an outstanding season and came away with a third-place finish behind Oak Ridge and Union Mine.
“We had our three seniors, who were the guiding light,” Galt head coach Janice Williams said Friday afternoon when asked about the season.
Williams also remarked on her younger players’ contributions to helping the Lady Warriors finish with just two losses on the year.
“Of course we had Riley Sexton. I put her in the number one or two spot for the whole year. I put her with Kristen Madsen,” Williams said.
This season was one of Galt’s best in recent history, as the Lady Warriors sent a player to the Section Masters for the first time in Williams’ eight years with the team.
“In my eight years, we’ve had kids who’ve went onto sub-sections but Riley is going on to Masters,” Williams said last week of her freshman.
The team had the opportunity to surpass Union Mine, but was missing one player and fell just short of second place at the SVC meet No. 2 on Oct. 15.
The third place finish didn’t mean the end of Galt’s days on the golf court this season, however.
In an effort to keep their skills fresh, Williams is encouraging the girls to keep practicing and to perhaps enter tournaments.
“We’re already planning what we’re doing for next week,” Williams said.

Senior night celebrated as Galt falls to Ponderosa

By Kerensa Uyeta-Buckley-With only one win to their credit in league play, it is not always easy for the Galt Lady Warriors to have the confidence of a team that is winning before a game.
The Lady Warriors varsity volleyball team hasn’t let up its effort, however.
Galt celebrated senior night last Thursday at its home game against Ponderosa High School, as it honored two of its varsity players.
Kim Briggs and Megan Carter were honored in their last home game of the volleyball season, and the Lady Warriors took on Ponderosa in the second-to-last game overall.
In a repeat of the teams’ earlier meeting this month, Ponderosa defeated Galt 3-0 and handed the Lady Warriors their fourth straight shut out this season.
Ponderosa won 25-14, 25-18, and 25-15 over a weary Galt team that has struggled against Sierra Valley Conference teams despite a talented mix of new and experienced players.
“We played really well against Ponderosa. This was the first time in SVC play that we have played at a high level of volleyball against a team of their caliber,” Galt head coach Eric Weber said Tuesday. “The girls played with a lot of heart and should be very proud of their efforts,” Weber said.
Galt and Cordova finished their two-game season series Tuesday night, in a game held at Cordova.
