What started out as any other normal Sunday for the Doxey family of Galt ended in tragedy Sunday night, when the youngest of the Doxey family ran into the street and was struck by a passing car.
Holly Doxey, who would have been three in December, was playing in the front of her house on Calimyrna Road alongside some of her brothers and sisters just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, when she suddenly ran toward the street. In spite of attempts to reach her and stop her, the child ran into the street. A passing vehicle was unable to stop in time and hit the child.
CHP Public Information Officer Adrian Qunitero said the driver of the car who hit Doxey is an 83-year-old male from the Galt area. According to the driver, and witnesses at the scene, he made every attempt to stop before hitting the child.
“He told us she just darted out in front of him no more than five feet away when he saw her,” said Quintero. “The witness statements support his statements, making this a tragic, tragic accident.”
Quintero said the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and has not been charged with any crime. Quintero also said that there would not be a criminal investigation into the incident.
“This is the second child hit and killed in a rural area in the recent past,” said Quintero. “These rural roadways can be so dangerous when the kids are out and about playing.”
Holly is the youngest of nine children in the Doxey family, and the daughter of Galt chiropractor Kaio Doxey and his wife Jeanenne.
Kaio Doxey told The Galt Herald on Tuesday that Holly was unconscious and not breathing from the moment the vehicle hit her. He said, in spite of his attempts at mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, followed by attempts by rescue personnel to save Holly, she never regained consciousness.
“The doctors at Lodi Memorial said she did not suffer any pain,” said Kaio, of the little girl he said loved ponies and flowers. “The neurosurgeons and trauma team at UC Davis said the same thing. She never experienced any pain.”
Holly was taken first to Lodi Memorial Hospital and then transferred to UC Davis Medical Center with major head and chest injuries. According to family, she was pronounced brain dead at 1:25 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Kaio said the family then made the decision to donate Holly’s organs to those in need through the organ donor program.
“So far, at least two other children have been helped by Holly’s passing,” said Kaio.
On behalf of the Doxey family, Kaio said he wanted to give thanks to the community of Galt.
“The entire family wants to give our heartfelt thanks for all of those who have expressed concern. We’re just so grateful for all of the phone calls and outreach,” said Kaio. “We’re doing as well as can be expected.”
There will be a viewing at the Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m. An additional viewing will be held prior to the service on Friday, June 27, at the LDS Church, 972 Vintage Oak, Galt, from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Holly’s memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at the LDS Church. Interment will be at Galt Cemetery.
An account to help the family with the expenses incurred due to this tragedy has been established at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Galt. To contribute, visit F&M at either their C Street or Twin Cities location, and ask for the Holly Doxey Memorial Fund, Account #0328648701.
