Maddog Video madness ends in Galt
Movies must be sold – great deals on dozens of titles

Maddog Video Store owner Chris Salcido said her small family-owned business couldn’t compete with online movie providers anymore. She and Maddog employee Jamie Shipman are pictured with but a few of dozens of videos that must be sold before doors close this week.

Galt’s beloved Maddog Movie rentals is closing this week. After being in business for more than seven years, they finally must call it quits.
The last family run video store in Galt will disappear from the Galt Mall on C Street this week. Many people will miss their incredibly low $1.99 daily movie rentals, but it seems they can’t compete with Redbox and Netflix online renters of DVDs and games.
Even with Monday and Wednesday rentals at an incredibly low 99 cents, a big fan of the senior citizens on tight budgets, Maddog has suffered the loss of loyal customers to the ease and selection of online and grocery store movie providers.
Maddog had more than 5,000 titles and multiple copies of each title. They had every thing from “Bad Boys II” all the way to “The Notebook” and newer contemporary movies as they have been released.
Owner and manager of Maddog, Chris Salcido, said that she thinks people are turning to the Internet for their videos.
“Some of our old costumers came in and purchased empty DVD cases,” said Salcido who was shocked by how fast the tides turned in the video store market. “Just three years ago, business was great and we had to expand. We had to have three employees on duty on Friday and Saturday nights”.
Faithful employee and friend Jamie Shipman thinks that technology might have something to do with it.
“I think the economic situation we are dealing with has affected business,” said Shipman, “but I think, too, that technology is changing at a rapid speed that we just can’t keep up with.”
All in all, it is a noteworthy loss of a community’s beloved movie store, a small town gathering place, and an owner who has put the community before herself trying to bring affordable movies to the citizens of Galt.
Maddog Movies has to be out of the space they occupy by the end of the month, which is good news for you if you are looking to add to your home movie collection. Maddog is selling off their entire stock of movies at discounted prices. That includes VHS and DVD, new movies and old alike, for a fraction of the cost you would pay at any retail store for the same titles.
Not looking to reopen the video store at any time in the future, Maddog also has extra fixtures for anyone who will take them.
Happy to have been in business in Galt, serving the entertainment needs of their friends, family and community, Maddog owners said they are saddened by the turn of events, but resolved to stay positive.
Stop by and say goodbye before it is too late – and maybe find that movie treasure to make your home collection complete
