As the only color guard team in Galt’s middle school district closes out its first and very successful season, Greer Middle School Color Guard team looks anxiously to its next season with a new name, McCaffrey Middle School Color Guard.
At the end of the 2007-2008 season, the Greer Middle School Color Guard had a very competitive and successful year. They performed in four different competitions as a first year team, each in different cities and each showing growth from one competition to the next.
After each competition, the team was able to bring home a large trophy reflective of their hard work. The team’s successes included one second, one third, a fourth and finally ending with another fourth place finish in the championship competition. For a first year team without prior color guard experience and a team that started much later than its competitors, hard work was the motto, and it showed with high marks.
This years team members are as follows: Amanda Griffin (captain), Emerald Schmitz (assistant captain), Brianna Van Ginkel, Michael Rowley, Joey Garrido, Nick Alves, Megan Graviet, Alissa Lynch and Sabrina Campbell.
The Greer Color Guard has many people to thank for its successful year, including the tireless head coach, Joy Maestretti, and her faithful assistant coach, Carrie Coats who spent many hours training the then new team, then there is principal Claudia Del Toro who also helped start and supported the team in every way. Del Toro invited the team to perform in several functions at the school, attended by both student and public audiences.
Thanks to Del Toro, the team was able to perform and show their newly acquired skills to a cross section of people.
More thanks goes to Greer vice principal Jan Wohl and the staff of the Boys and Girls Club who helped by providing much needed space for the team to practice, to Gina Stilfield who did all the paperwork so the team could attend competitions, to the Greer maintenance staff for letting the team practice after the scheduled gym cleaning time and were always so kind and patient.
The team would also like to thank the supportive staff at Greer and say they will miss you next year, a great big thanks to the high school color guard for donation of last season’s equipment and uniforms, and most of all thanks to all the parents who came to practices, took the team to each competition, and supported the team each and every day throughout the season.
As this year closes, just know the team is already gearing up for next season.
So if you’re going to be a McCaffrey student in the 2008-2009 school year and want to be part of an award winning team, it’s not too late to join.
All are welcome, come learn something new, make some friends and have fun at the same time. Hope to see you there.
