It was a beautiful calm morning for the promoting Robert L. McCaffrey Middle School Class of 2008 on June 4. The wind took a break as more than 260 of the middle school students promoted on to the next phase of their education, high school.
The ceremony started at 9:30 a.m., with students passing through decorative columns with a large “2008” over the top. Assistant Principal Annette Lane welcomed the students and audience to this momentous occasion. Each student had either a green or gold pom pom that they shook as they enjoyed the ceremony.
Students Maricella Bautista, Janett Gomez, Tara Merino, Kailey Middleton and Amanda Yamashita sang the national anthem.
Principal Ron Rammer addressed the graduates and commented on the fact that not everyone he remembered made it through to the high school graduation. He warned this class to stay focused and to be diligent as he was looking forward to being there for them again at their high school graduation.
Students Evalin Fiatoa and Natalie Loduca took turns addressing the students and telling them to look to the future, saying, they have all the tools they need to accomplish their goals.
The eighth grade teachers presented each student with their certificates, and Assistant Principal Gina Mekeel presented the class of 2008.
Then, to the delight of the crowd, the students pulled on their pom poms and confetti shot high into the air in celebration.
Ms. Mekeel commented on how special this class of eighth graders has been.
“Usually the sixth graders come in quiet and shy, not really knowing what middle school is going to be like. This class however, came in feeling very comfortable and not at all shy,” said Mekeel. “They were quite a challenge at first, but luckily I like challenges.”
Mekeel reflected on how the Class of 2008 made her feel as the year came to an end.
“On our last day of school while we barbecued at Rancho Seco and hung out with our eighth graders, I just kept thinking how awesome it was to be able to have seen them get a little more mature each year and develop into the great kids they are,” said Mekeel. “They have become terrific young adults who are ready to make the next step to high school. I look forward to seeing them walk across the stage at their high school graduation.”
Graduate Nichole Walton is really looking forward to high school.
“I am really excited to meet new friends from the other schools as well as hanging out with my old ones,” said Walton.
