There was a quiet sense of knowing that something very special was about to end, yet everyone wore a bright smile and held back tears of joy as the 2008 Vernon E. Greer Middle School Class of 2008 took to the stage to say goodbye to elementary school.
What makes the Class of 2008 so special is that they will be the final eighth grade class to promote from Greer and head into high school.
Due to recent district reorganization plans, Greer has been closed as a middle school, following last week’s commencement ceremony, to be opened as a second through sixth grade campus next year.
“It must seem only a few years ago when you were walking your babies to kindergarten,” said Greer Principal Claudia Del Torro-Anguiano, in her remarks at last week’s Greer promotion ceremony. “Now they are going to high school.”
Del Toro-Anguiano gave her students four pieces of advice to follow in high school and in life.
She told them to first, and foremost, follow their dreams and never let anybody take them away; to have a plan because, if they don’t know where they are going, they will never be able to get there; to choose friends wisely who have similar values; and drink lots of water and never forget to wear sunblock.
Del Torro-Anguianshared a moment of reverence for the final promotion class for Greer and said, “I hope you walk a little taller this morning, and I hope you wear those gowns with pride.”
Top Mustangs for the Class of 2008 Aimee Georguson and Justice Crisologo addressed their classmates, reminding them of some of the highlights of their tenure at Greer and of how much fun they have had, and how much they have grown since first stepping onto the Greer campus as sixth graders.
“We learned a lot of life lessons and how to choose our friends wisely,” shared the pair. “We had a lot of awesome and helpful experiences that will help us go on to high school, but we will always remember our experiences at Vernon E. Greer Middle School.
The ceremony, although brief and touching, was highlighted by a musical performance by Olivia French, who earned first chair in the saxophone for the area’s honor band, and Greer music program director Robin Richman.
While the horses will still run at Greer, it will be Galt’s ponies who attend beginning in the fall, as direction changes for Galt’s elementary schools.
Congratulations to all of the Mustangs of the Greer Class of 2008 – you’re truly a class act.
