Community of Character
Responsibility the focus for October

By Glenna Robinson
Special to the Herald -
Take the pledge
During October, I pledge to fulfill my role in our Community of Character by acting with responsibility: doing what I am supposed to do, always doing my best and being accountable for my actions.
I hope you have the opportunity to take the pledge for all six of the character traits: Integrity, honesty, respect, pride in community, responsibility, and caring and compassion. Our character is defined in them, and it is what sets our Galt community apart.
We hope to see the pledge displayed around the city of Galt as reminders of our community values.

Fall season and elections
Our beautiful valley is ripe with pumpkins once again. With Galt Diversity Day and Back-to-School behind us, and changing fall weather ahead, the Galt Community of Character Coalition (GCCC) is busy with fundraising for projects and work the remainder of this year and into next year.
We want to take this time to thank all the many community organizations that have helped us with start-up funding. We wouldn’t be this far along without your commitments and dedication to our wonderful organization.
We hope you and others will continue to catch the vision of this community-wide movement to good character, fostering good citizenship throughout Galt.
One of the first ways we can take our responsibilities seriously is to vote. The upcoming election is one of the most critical in modern times.
You may ask, “What can I do to make a difference?” Let me just say that the time to stay home from the voting booth is over. No more sitting on the fence and riding it out.
Whatever our persuasions on the people and the issues, we must take our responsibilities seriously and vote. We must be part of the solution, however small, in all parts of public and community life. Otherwise, in being passive, we become part of the problem.
When would there be a more important time to be active with friends and neighbors than now?

Spirit and character
The spirit and character of the people in Galt are palpable. What makes our community such a wonderful place to live? I ask you, would only improving the buildings and traffic give us a better life?
Why do people leave? I would suggest that it’s because there is a perception of improved values somewhere else.
Personally, I am happier where the people are friendly and working together. The answer is love.

How to join the coalition0
Membership in the Galt Community of Character Coalition is free and includes anyone living or working within the boundaries of the Galt Joint Union High School District.
Meetings are held monthly, usually the second Thursday, with one meeting in the evening each quarter.
Activities of the coalition and notice of meeting time and place are reported monthly in The Galt Herald.
You may contact the coalition directly, as follows: Write to GCCC, P.O. Box 902, Galt, CA 95632; or e-mail GCC@GHSD.k12.CA.US. By phone, call 209-745-5852. We would love to hear from you and enjoy your participation.
