The year 2008 has been a historic one for Estrellita High School in more ways than one, as Estrellita principal Tony Lara said in his opening remarks during graduation on May 28.
Estrellita students and staff completed their first year of class inside their brand new facility off Marengo Road, marking a big change from their cramped former space behind Galt High School.
In addition, Estrellita celebrated the graduation of 109 students, their largest class in school history.
“Your thoughts of graduating came true because you continued to work hard,” Lara told the graduates.
Josh Azua, Britney Akin, Mayra Zamora, Anthony McElrath and Will Christman won the Galt Lions Club scholarship, which was presented by Laurel Vermeltfoort.
Akin and Christman won the Ashley Renee Perez scholarship, which was presented by Henry Perez, Jr.
Zamora, a graduating junior, won the Galt Chamber of Commerce scholarship, which was presented by David Herburger.
Azua, Michael Martinez and Akin won the Galt Valley Oaks Grange scholarship, which was presented by Tammy Morgan-Sullivan.
Christman was awarded the John Moran Memorial scholarship, presented by Barbara Payne.
Akin won the Galt High Alumni Association scholarship to further her education in culinary arts, said presenter Clara Miller.
Zamora rounded out the list of scholarship winners by winning the Richard C. Davis scholarship, which was presented by Davis.
Alicia Winn, Erika Frias and Yeni Ramirez won the Citizenship Award, and Diana Bernabe, Azua and Geraldine Guzman won the Leadership Award, which was presented by Sonya Limon and Ann Millet.
Christman, Timothy Vue and Jeremy Webb won the School Pride award, presented by Siva Ponusamy.
Liliana Gamboa, Raul Alfaro and Efrain Zambrano won the Teacher’s Award, which was presented by Rick Uhlinger and Kim Wilson.
Class of 2008 leadership students presented a framed leadership picture to Estrellita staff as a gift for “helping them realize their goals.”
Galt Joint Union High School board members also noted Lara’s accomplishment of being a California Administrator of the Year and recognized retiring teacher Toni Todd’s 30 years of service.
