Editor’s Note: As Sacramento County Fair results and photos are produced over the next few weeks, The Galt Herald encourages area clubs, parents and individual participants to submit those results and photos to the paper for publication. It is not possible for the paper to cover the many area kids who show and compete at the fair each year, but we do take pride in making the space available for the community to share its fair experiences.

While results are still being complied for cumulative release, one thing is certain, the team members of the Galt High School FFA shone under the rainy skies of the 2008 Sacramento County Fair.
With champions, grand champions, and market winners in livestock, and stellar placing in the indoor exhibits category, GHS piled on the awards to make the 2008 fair an affair to remember.
With 142 students participating, GHS made an impressive showing at the premier opportunity to showcase a year’s worth of dedication, time and energy.
Many students begin their annual fair project during the summer of the previous year, picking out the perfect lamb, piglet, or bunny to care for through the year, always with an eye on the prizes at the county fair.
“The kids went beyond our expectations with the animals they raised, showed and handled,” said Galt High FFA Advisor Cheryl Reece. “The boosters organization came out in full force, and our parents were phenomenal as well, getting students prepared to go in and out of the ring, feeding the kids lunch, and transporting animals and exhibits to the fair.”
Dedicating tons of time and energy into their projects, Reece said the fair is the place where everyone can see what the FFA program is all about.
“When people question the ongoing, year-round aspect of this program they need to come to the fair,” said Reece. “The kids put a lot of time into this, and different species take different lengths of time, but no one can prepare for the fair without a dedicated effort to be ready to go.”
Reece said the Galt FFA kids performed better than ever and that the spirit of camaraderie between them was outstanding.
“They absolutely had a great time. The spirit was there, and they were all happy for their peers who received awards and accolades,” said Reece. “That is one feeling, or motto we really try to live by,when we win, we win together. It’s not just about one person. It’s about the group and when one person does well, we are doing well. They really embrace that idea and support each other, even when negative things happen.”
According to Reece, the county fair comes at a time of year when everyone is tired and that the fair, while physically exhausting, can actually restore energy to the team.
“It is refreshing to go to the fair and see them do what comes naturally to them when they get into the ring,” said Reece. “That makes it all worthwhile and restores our faith in everything we do here.”
