County Fair starts Thursday

Herald Harbinger
By Jean Hess -
Arcohe kids who are members of Herald 4-H will be going to Sacramento County Fair at Cal Expo this week, from Thursday through Monday May 22-26 (when Memorial Day will be celebrated).
Families and friends are urged to attend and support the kids who are showing animals and other projects. Admission is free, and a lot of family activities are featured, including free kids play zones, petting zoos, pony rides, free contests and live music.
There will also be harness racing May 22-24 and a demolition derby May 24. These special activities require a separate ticket for admission. For more information and discounts for carnival rides, call 916-263-2975 or go online at www.sacair.com.

NW meeting
The local chapter of Neighborhood Watch (NW) will meet in Hendrickson Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 (behind HFD Station No. 87 in downtown Herald).
All area residents are invited to attend. There are no dues or obligations, only a desire to keep the area crime free and safe from other dangerous factors, such as problems caused by fires, storms and other hazardous weather conditions.
Meeting together with local law enforcement personnel, NW affords an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other and meet with members of Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department who serve the South Bureau, which includes Herald.
They also learn about services available from Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff (VIPS) and from many county agencies.

HACA meeting
Herald Area Civic Association (HACA) will host a hot dog feed and potluck dinner prior to its regular monthly meting on Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. The event takes place at the Blue Gum Winery, 13637 Borden Road, about a half mile east of Clay Station Road.
Members are urged to invite others from the Herald-Galt area to attend this supper meeting and join other HACA activities, which are aimed at preserving the rural quality of life in the south county.
For more information, visit HACA95638@aol.com or call HACA president Denny Lewis at 745-7887.

HCC news
Herald Community Club (HCC) is nearing the point of decision for Herald Day 2008 honored citizens. Four nominations have been made, two for couples and two for individuals.
We can’t mention names, of course, but they are all folks who have been very active in serving the Herald community. Carla Swarthout is directing efforts to choose this year’s honorees.
Herald Day features an Old Orneries booth, staffed by honored citizens from prior years. Our first honored citizens, back in 1981, were Sara and Sandy Quiggle, proprietors of Herald Store. They were also postmasters, firefighters and all-around good citizens in the early days when “if you lived here, you had to do it all.”
Scott Dumont is still diligently gathering ads for the Herald Day 2008 book. If you want to have an ad in this popular publication, better call Scott at 916-687-6318 or (cell) 916-257-4430.
Time for completing the book is growing short, and Scott is approaching a deadline. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have field staff to go out gathering ads, so please call him before it’s too late, if you want your business to appear in those pages.
Ad prices start at $30 for business card size, $60 for quarter page, $85 for half page, and $125 for full page. The back page goes to the highest bidder, with bids opening at $150 for that space.

Arcohe School
Arcohe Parents Teachers Club (APTC) elected officers for the 2008-09 school year during its May meeting, choosing Mindy McCreery as president. Erin Smith was elected as vice president, Tonia Nichols as secretary, and Melissa Snow as treasurer. Sixth grade teacher Susan Peterson was chosen as teacher representative for the club.
Around the last week in June, APTC will host the fireworks booth across from Herald Store. This is a fundraiser for sixth graders to attend science camp, and all parents who will have a sixth grade student next year are urged to get involved in these activities that support the class.
Not every family is able to afford science camp for their student, but Arcohe, along with APTC, wants to make that opportunity available for every sixth grader who would like to attend the weeklong learning adventure.
The club also voted to run their traditional tri-tip sandwich booth during Herald Day. They will also be selling Arcohe T-shirts in a variety of sizes at the festival. All funds earned from these sales go right back into needs of all Arcohe students.
Parents are urged to contact the new officers early and volunteer to help run the booth, even if they can only work a few hours. It will be a big help for APTC and the projects they support for the students. Parents who are newcomers to the Arcohe family are especially welcome to join APTC and get to know teachers and other parents.
