Market to be open Sundays from 8-11 a.m.

Looking for a unique way to spend some time with mom on Mother’s Day? How about a visit to Galt’s very own certified farmers market?
Scheduled to open on May 11, Galt Farmers Market, which will be located at 500 Fairway Drive, next to Burger King, will feature the finest fresh produce and vegetables from some of the California’s finest certified farmers.
You’ll find a wide variety of garden fresh veggies, including carrots, beets, turnips, beans, cabbage, broccoli and oriental vegetables.
Add to that fresh spices, garlic, olives, nuts and onions, and you have the perfect spot to find all of your fresh veggie needs.
Looking for the best in fresh fruits? Galt Farmers Market has you covered there as well.
From cherries, strawberries, apricots, peaches and berries, the market will supply the best in fruits the season has to offer.
Want to make a special Sunday even more special? Then pick up some fresh eggs, or a fresh baked pie, bread, cookies or other dessert while you shop for the family’s weekly produce needs.
The idea of Galt City Councilman Tim Raboy, a farmers market in Galt has been in the making for the past few years. Decisions on where to locate the market, when to hold it and who would provide produce held the project up, at first, until last year when Galt City Council approved of the concept and put it into action, saying they support the desire of Galt residents who cannot attend the weekly Galt Market, because they are working on Tuesday and Wednesdays, to have the ability to enjoy the fresh produce and fruit farmers market provide.
“Farmers markets rejuvenate cities and bring residents and visitors to your city. The goal is for residents to enjoy fresh, locally grown produce and also support other local businesses connected to the market,” said Raboy. “I have been hearing for years from residents, asking for a farmers market, and residents need to remember that this will continue to run only if the people here support it.”
Parks and Recreation Director Boyce Jeffries said not only will the farmers market make fresh veggies and fruit available to Galt residents, but also it will give families something to do on Sundays.
“People seem to really like to stroll through the market as a family,” said Jeffries. “It will create a nice place to go after church or Sunday breakfast to gather up the fruits and vegetables the family will need for the coming week. Plus, with the fresh baked goods, you can have a treat while you shop, and take home Sunday dessert.”
Sponsored by the city of Galt, the farmers market will be managed by Carlos Dutra, who has managed the certified farmers market in Stockton for a number of years.
“We are seeking local merchants who like to participate as a vendor at the farmers market,” said Jeffries. “A community table will be available for free to local merchants and other local organizations who would like to display informational material at the farmers market.”
Not intended to be a money-maker for the city, both Raboy and Jeffries said the people of Galt will decide whether the market stays or goes by whether they shop or not.
“This is to give the public their choice for their produce and to support local farmers and agriculture preservation,” said Raboy. “If the public supports the market, the market will be successful and the market will continue past the six-week trial period.”
