The director of the Galt Community Choir is handing his director’s baton over to someone who would enjoy it.
Don Ross of Galt took over the directorship of the Galt Community Choir after former longtime director Betty Bohn passed away in December 2006.
Ross feels as though it’s a tough decision to step down from the volunteer position.
“It’s been a very difficult decision to make because of the dedication of the people involved,” said Ross. “I established a lot of friendships during this time.”
Ross picked up where Bohn left off during the latter part of 2006, when she seemed to gradually hand the reins over to Ross when she knew that her diagnosis of cancer would not allow her to continue. Bohn continued to be involved with the choir, which she had originally established in 1987, as long as she was able.
“We had a shared understanding then,” Ross said, speaking of Bohn. “She passed away the weekend of the Christmas concert.”
Ross enjoyed the aspect of taking on the challenges of putting a program together and then seeing the results, after many hours of practice. The choir rehearsed regularly at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Galt.
“It taught me a lot,” said Ross. “It rekindled an appreciation and love of working with adults.”
Alan and Michelle Weinel know that Ross will be missed as director.
“He’s provided wonderful leadership,” said Alan. “Music is so important in his life.”
Choir members realize that it’s just what has to happen for now.
“It’s probably the right thing to do,” said Alan. “It’s understandable, but we’re going to miss him. Don and Faith are great people.”
Ross would like to express his appreciation to Boyce Jeffries and Galt Parks and Recreation for all of their support of the choir.
“They did so much to make the job so much easier,” said Ross.
The position of choir director is open for interested individuals. For more information, call Gayle Dixon at 745-9752 or Ross at 745-3760.
Choir rehearsals will resume when a new director is found. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves music to work with a great group of people, to help bring musical entertainment and fun to local events.
