More than 140 Galt High School tracksters ran more than 2,800 laps in one hour and 15 minutes last week in an effort to earn much-needed funds to purchase uniforms and equipment for the GHS track team. Since all the spring sports are the victims of budget cuts this year, the team is doing what it can to help replace the deficit. Love of the sport had them asking friends and community for their support.
All the track equipment, including the stadium, are going to need upgrades soon and with the governor’s budget cuts, there are no upgrades in sight.
On the simple side, worn out hurdles will cost the district $33,000, and a new pole vault pit will cost $12,000.
Large ticket items include an all-weather track, a project GHS has had on the radar for a long time, at a cost of $400,000. Perhaps highest on the list of needs, and most set back by budget cuts, is the $2.5 million needed for stadium and bleacher modernization and upgrade.
“I broke an old pole trying to get over the bar,” said GHS pole vaulter Drew Retherford. “It will cost $375 to replace that, and right now some vaulters are having to use the wrong size and this really affects performance.”
Retherford went on to say, “We really need five new poles and are trying to raise the funds to purchase some. It really makes it difficult for us to compete with the other schools in our league.”
Proud to be Warriors, many members of the track team would like to see old worn out uniforms replaced to better represent their commitment to GHS.
“We wanted to raise money to replace the old uniforms this year. Our uniforms are pathetic, the logos are peeling off, the elastic has ripped out of the shorts,” said Kristin Madsen, thrower. “Some of the kids purchased some of their own warm-ups for $90. Those that can’t are stuck wearing the old ones that are pink, not even red anymore due to all the years of washing. “
So far, the athletes have turned in almost $3,200, some of which will help to purchase T-shirts and sweatshirts for the athletes.
