Are you smarter than a Cougar?
Lake Canyon PTA hosts game show

Contestant Katie Grindrod and fifth grade student Annie Bishop wait eagerly to hear from hostess Angela Banbury if they got the right answer to the question “From the 1300’s to 1600’s a great interest in science, art and literature developed in Europe. This period of time was known as what?” Both participants were relieved to hear they got the right answer, “The Renaissance.”

The Lake Canyon Elementary School PTA hosted a night of fun-filled trivia based on the hit TV show “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?”
“The night was a huge success. We not only had a great time, but everyone walked away with a little more knowledge as well as an appreciation for everything students learn at school each day. Many thanks to the ongoing support of our Lake Canyon PTA,” said Principal Suzanne Souligny.
The rules of the game were slightly altered so that more students could participate. As opposed to only including fifth grade students, the PTA elected to involve students from every grade starting with first graders. When adult contestants were asked a first grade question, they went head-to-head with a first grader.
Just like on TV, the adults could get help from the students if they weren’t completely sure of the answer. Students were ready to assist if the contestants should decide to cheat, copy, or be saved by the students’ answers.
Angela Banbury, fifth grade teacher and host for the evening, assured the audience that this would be the only occasion at Lake Canyon where cheating and copying was permitted.
The adult contestants included Jesse Garcia, school custodian; Lori Muth, first grade teacher; and Katie Grindrod, librarian at Galt public library. For the fourth and final contestant, adults from the audience who wanted a chance to play the game entered a drawing as they came in. The lucky final spot went to parent Kendra D’Agostino.
D’Agostino flew through the rounds with little help from the students and made it all of the way to the final questions, which she had to answer by herself. Her final question was “If something happens to the U.S. President, and Vice President, who is next in line to assume presidency?”
D’Agostino correctly answered “Speaker of the House.”
The PTA also put together amazing prize packages for the contestants and had door prizes for the students in the audience. The Lake Canyon PTA would like to thank all of their sponsors: Edward Jones, Discovery Museum, Mandango’s, Island Burgers, Gold Land Sunsplash, B Street Theater, Scandia, In-N-Out Burger, Wholey Ravioli, Galt Frostie, TGI Fridays, River Cats and the Crocker Art Museum.
The event also had help from the Galt City Council Youth Committee who provided volunteers to help at the snack bar and gave students raffle tickers. Family Life Church provided a portable overhead screen so that the whole audience could play along and read the questions with the contestants.
Participating students included first grade students, Serena Campos, Alex Muzzin, Matthew Hopper, and Maddie Harding; second grade students, Ashanti Cason, Malia Tuitavuki, Hannah Edwards and Grant Guerrero; third grade students, Sarah Berendsen, Jackie Muzzin, Marielle Luhdorff and Brooke Gilstrap; fourth grade students, Sammy Hohn, Christian Torgerson, Carlie Stanfill and Elise Pantega; fifth grade students, Nic Cruz, Rebekah Rodriguez, Seth Medina and Annie Bishop.
