- Dave Sauer will present a Wurlitzer organ concert on Sunday, March 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Towe Auto Museum. Cost is free with museum admission of $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students (under 5 are free).
The Wurlitzer organ, originally owned by famed Hollywood director Cecile B. DeMille, was restored by the Sierra chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society and is housed at Towe. It contains more than 1,000 individual pipes, ranging from pencil-sized to more than 16 feet in length.
The pipes are voiced to sound like the instruments of an orchestra and a choir, which allowed the organ to be the voice of films up until 1927 when sound films began to be produced.
The organ can also produce movie sound effects, such as trail and boat whistles, sirens, birdcalls and even an auto horn.

Movie night at Towe Auto Museum will feature “Nick Langdon Presents an Evening with John Barrymore.” Cost is $10 for the 7 p.m. showing at 2200 Front Street in Sacramento.
Barrymore was mostly known for his great dramatic roles and his famous profile, but on rare occasions, he was given the chance to do comedy.
In Twentieth Century, Barrymore shines as hammy stage director Oscar Jaffe, guiding the career of one Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard) whom he’s plucked from the ranks to be a star. Trouble ensues when Plotka changes her name to Lily Garland and bolts to Hollywood to make movies. These two meet by accident on the Twentieth Century Limited, and Jaffe pulls out all the stops to lure the former star back to the stage.
Directed by Howard Hanks, this 19343 Columbia picture is one of the earliest of the “Screwball” comedy genre.
Attendees will also enjoy hearing Dave Moreno on the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, followed by a prologue featuring producer/host Nick Langdon and Rebecca Kane.
