- Local artist Paige Lampson attended the International Decorative Artisans League’s convention in Charleston, South Carolina this summer along with more than 450 artists and 50 teachers from all over the world.
While there, Lampson was able to take a wall finishing class from “Dueling Trowels” teachers Tammy and Brian Burleigh. The Burleigh’s are from Colorado and travel the globe teaching their techniques.
Lampson learned a lot in their class.
“I was very fortunate to be able to learn some new wall finishing techniques to bring home to my customers,” said Lampson. “The Burleighs had so much information and were very generous in sharing it.”
Not just a convention to enhance artists’ skills, the IDAL team also takes on one community art project each year.
“We always try to give something back through our philanthropic project each year. This year I was able to join with other artists and help create a mural for a local children’s hospital,” Lampson shared.
During the weeklong convention, some artists donated their time throughout the week to complete two murals for the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital. MUSC Children’s Hospital is dedicated to enhancing the health of children throughout South Carolina, while providing an environment that supports excellence in pediatric patient care, teaching and research.
Lampson was also able to meet and spend some time with HGTV personality Danielle Hirsch of the show “Color Splash”.
“Danielle was there to promote a product in our expo. I was fortunate enough that she allowed me to take her out of her booth and show her around some of the classes we offered at our convention,” said Lampson, “I think she was very impressed with the variation we offer, and I look forward to seeing the inspiration appear in her show.”
IDAL has been helping to educate artists since 1984. The International Decorative Artisans League is an international educational nonprofit association dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the art of stenciling, faux finishing and related decorative painting. Membership provides opportunities for professional growth through education, public awareness and networking. For more information on IDAL, visit them online at www.decorativeartisans.org.
