Herald Day - Still doin’ great in 2008

George Warner of The Bog Bodies, who took first place for spirit, makes a valiant effort to keep the ball in play at the annual Herald Day mud volleyball tournament held on Saturday.
Paige Lampson - Hundreds of area residents turned out for the annual Herald Day celebration held in Herald Community Park on Saturday, enjoying food, fellowship, games, auction, parade, tons of fun and perfect weather.
The small community with the big heart came out in droves in support of all kinds of causes, and to get together with old friends, make new ones and get to know the faces of their neighbors. A long-time tradition in Herald, the one-day celebration of all that is Herald is a family favorite not only for those who live in Herald but for everyone in the area who wants to enjoy the country lifestyle and community closeness of Herald for even one day.
The day started with a parade that showed off their small town pride. Unique and original floats of a wide variety paraded down Main Street in Herald, all competing for awards.
This year even more things were offered at the annual charity auction in support of Herald Community Club. This favorite event helped raise hundreds of dollars toward HCC community outreach projects to benefit the families in need of Herald.
Auctioneers spent time and energy talking up the items as they came for bid, encouraging bidders to bid against one another, all in good fun, for a good cause. From baskets of goodies to bales of hay and every household item in between, the Herald Day auction did not fail to add tons of fun to the day’s festivities – and some much needed dollars to the HCC benefit accounts.
Booths were erected in support of everything from local churches to cancer patients. Also included were lots of craft booths where artists sold their wares.
The favorite of all Herald Day activities for many, and great fun to watch even if you weren’t on a team, was the annual Herald Day mud volleyball tournament. Local citizens sign up to play on volleyball teams. Sounds like a fun activity for the afternoon. However, this isn’t your standard volleyball arena. No, at Herald Day each volleyball court is transformed into a sea of mud, at least three inches deep. In 2008, 51 teams took on the battles of the day covered with mud and virtually unrecognizable as they competed for top team honors.
Taking home top honors for 2008 were the Los Chivos (Crazy Goats) in first place at the end of a very long day of play. The Dirty Minds team followed in second place, and the Dirty But Dangerous team came in third place.
Taking home top honors for spirit were the Bog Bodies in first place, the Beaver Retrievers in second, and the UFP Mud Hawks in third.
No matter the age, everyone came together to honor the ease and simplicity of country living and of knowing your neighbors as friends. Plans are already under way for the 2009 Herald Day, which is sure to be the toast of the town for all who attend.
