Meredith and Haines slam recall as ‘lies’

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy.
Taking their fight against a recall attempt to the public domain of cyberspace, Galt City Councilmen Andrew Meredith, who serves as mayor, and Don Haines have begun broadcasting their defense on the popular cyber network YouTube.
In a recent press release issued by publicity coordinator for Meredith, Susan Wood, the pair accuse the special interest group running the recall campaign, Protecting Galt’s Future, of lying to recall proponents in order to get them to sign the recall petition.
The press release directed readers to a video Web site where recall petition proponent Opal Kasparian could be seen saying she has “changed her mind” about signing the recall petition and that she feels representatives of PGF misled her with the information they presented her when they visited her Avondale Court home seeking her signature on the recall petition.
The video was removed from YouTube after Kasparian said, while she had given her permission for her interview with Meredith and Haines to be videotaped, she had not given permission for it to be aired in cyberspace, or anywhere else.
In a more formal fashion, Meredith and Haines have also officially reacted to the recall petition by filing responses to the petition with the Galt City Clerk.
“In their grounds for recall, proponents make outright lies about the financial condition of the city in order to scare voters,” said Meredith in his response. “The truth is that the individuals pushing the recall want to make their rich developer friends richer. The group funding this recall despises elected officials that refuse to be bought. That is why they have targeted me.”
In his response, Haines characterizes the citizens’ political action committee as a committee that exists solely to continue to push the city to accept the Delta Greens, formerly Del Webb, senior housing project just outside city limits.
“There is no satisfying these individuals, and they will lie, cheat and deceive the public in an attempt to sway them into believing their cause is justified,” said Haines. “If someone has to lie and exaggerate the truth to get public support, they have alternative motives.”
Both Haines and Meredith claim that attacks on their service as council members stems solely from their objection to, and consistent votes against, the much disputed Delta Greens project since they were elected.
“These individuals are going to attempt to achieve their goal by casting dispersions on myself as well as other members of this council in order to create confusion and discontent among the citizens of our community,” said Haines.
Protecting Galt’s Future could not be reached for comment.
